FRS Radios

A group of us are going on a cycling trip in Tuscany in September and we were thinking about bringing our FRS radios with us so that we could still communicate if we divide up. Can anyone tell me if they would work in Italy and if not, what would? Thanks

Any radio will work anywhere. However, you may be violating the law by using it.

FRS is a license-free service in the US for the assigned frequencies. In other countries, they may not have an equivalent service, and even if they do, the authorized frequencies may be different. For all you know, the US FRS band may be used by police there...

Contact the Italian embassy and ask them if it's OK to use there.

Hi D,

Your FRS radios operate at 462.5625-467.7125 MHz.

Italian systems seem to work at 433 and 446 MHz.

See http://www.mediaelettra.com/radioen.htm

Your radios will work, but you might interfere with emergency services frequencies.

Using FRS and GMRS radios is illegal in all of Europe. You should acquire some PMR446 units, which is the standard there. They are license-free.
