10 Day Greece WHERE To GO?!?

My husband and I are going to Greece for first time - flying into Athens and have 10 days. We want to do at least one island - probably Santorini. We were thinking of 3 days Athens, 4 days to Peloppenese/Olympia/Delphi and maybe Meteora Monasteries , and 3 days Santorini. Does this sound like a good trip or should we cut a day from Meteora Monasteries or Athens or Santorini to go somewhere else? Any suggestions would be helpful.

Hi

I was really impressed with Mystras - see - http://www.culture.gr/2/21/212/21205a/e212ea01.html.

To save time it may be possible to fly to Santorini once you get to Athens Airport. Look up schedules on Olympic or Aegean Air websites to see if this works in with your arrival time.

Some may argue you can trim a day off Athens and Santorini. That way you can also take in Nafplio, Epidaurus and Mycenae.

I loved Greece and I'm sure you will too.

Good luck.

thanks for the fast response, I will check out the mystras homepage. If I take 4 days to Peloppenese , I think Nafplio, Epidaurus and Mycenae will be included with a day also to Meotora Monasteries. I have nothing booked yet and will be making arrangments within the next week or two , so any other help will be appreciated! This trip will take place in Sept.

Raven - your trip sounds great! Just be aware that if you are travelling by ferry to the island that you need to be flexible as the schedule is liable to change due to weather. Also keep in mind that the ferry takes at least 4 hours plus you have to be there 1 hour before boarding.

Have a great time. I'm leaving in 3 weeks - only 22 days til departure!!

Raven2003, we are going to be in Greece exactly on same days as you Sept, 3 - 14. This is our first trip also. Here what we have chosen for our iterinary:
2 days in Athens, 3 days Delphi/Meteora, 3 days Santorini, 2 days Naxos. How are you going to explore the mainland - driving or bus tour? I cannot decide if we should drive to Delphi/Meteora or take a tour.

Hello Raven--

Just a quick reply to your post. I've traveled to Greece 5 times and I'm a little confused that people mention traveling to Delphi/Meteroa area as if they are close together. Maybe I am wrong, but my map places them very far apart. What I've learned in my travels to Greece is that everything takes more time and effort than normally you would expect and it calls for alot of patient's and flexibility.

For a first trip to Greece and with only 10 days may I recommend; 2 days Athens at the beginning of your trip; fly from Athens to Santorini on Aegean Air, 4 days Santorini; 2 days Oia then 2 days Beach town or closer to Fira (for more activity). Rent a car on Santorini for a least 2 days; there is so much to see. Most Tourist see so little of Santorini, but true Travelers see the most and the best Then I would fly back to Athens and take taxi to the port (Pireaus)and take hydrofoil (high speed boat) to Hydra; 2 days on Hydra will be a wonderful end to your memorable trip. We always end our trips to Greece with 2-3 days on Hydra; no mopeds or car noise, just peace; which allows us to get ready for our trip home. Then return to Athens for one more day and leave for home the next.

I know this is different from your mentioned itinerary, but believe me, you will enjoy the experience more if you have time to relax and enjoy yourself. And after all, once you've been to Greece, your whole life change and you'll start counting the years from the last time you traveled to Greece. Happy Travels - Sandy in Oregon

Thanks for responses!! Well I am going to cut out Meteora Monasteries I think and just do 2 days Peloppenese/Olympia and one day Delphi, that leaves us with about 7 more days , I am still thinking 3 days Athens and 3 Santorini , but I may do 4 days Santorini, not sure, but I do appreciate all your advice! Is it easy to get around Santorini by renting a car or scooter? Helen - I think we are going to hire a driver to do delphi. Are you also doing peloppense/olympia?

I personally wouldn't rent a scooter/moped in Santorini unless you have previous experience driving one -- it's not a good place for your first moped experience. Lots of fast cars and hair-pin turns high up on the cliffs. We rented a little convertible for a day while there and loved it. We also found it handy to have a car to hold the few purchases we picked up on our day exploring the island (like wine from the winery!). Whatever you choose to rent, there are plenty of rental companies around. Your hotel should be able to help arrange a rental...ours did.

Yes, I don't think the moped is a good idea for us either. Maybe we will rent a car, but is there really a lot of parking spaces everywhere?

Depends on where you're trying to park. I wouldn't try to park in Fira. Parking is very limited and if you don't park in just the right spot, you'll get ticketed. There is plenty of public transport and taxi service between Fira and Oia, and both villages are best (or only) explored by foot. You'll want the car if you want to travel around the rest of the island to explore the beaches, Akrotiri, wineries, etc...and in those cases, parking is not a problem. We only had the car for one day and we went from Oia all the way to the other end of the island.

If we have 3 full days in Santorini, and we are staying near Imerovigli between Fira and OIA, one day maybe we could take our time and walk to Fira, and take the cable car down to the village. Then next day maybe we can rent a car and visit OIA, Akrotiri, Pyrgos, and Perissa? Does this sound good?? I will post this as a new topic. Thanks

Helen - Are you doing the Peloppenese also? If so do you want to split the cost of a driver or tour guide? How are you getting to Delphi?

Raven, no, unfortunately we are not doing Peloppenese at this time (maybe next trip). Actually, if I knew that I could split a cost of hiring a driver, we would probably do that, but at this point I cannot change our plans, because I have flights to/from islands booked. We will probably take a three days tour to Delphi/Meteora with CHAT tours (or maybe driving, still can not decide, I hate bus tours). I realize, that Delphi and Meteora are not close to each other, but I really want to see Meteora, I've heard it is spectacular. I would love to hire a driver there, but it would be too expensive just for us.

Helen - We also are interested in seeing Delphi/Meteora but are not interested in a bus tour either which I think CHAT tours are right? Delphi and Meteora are both possible to see in 2 days and if you are interested in splitting cost of tour guide/driver I can see what information I can find. My husband and I would only want two days for delphi and meteora because the other two days we want to spend in peloppenese/olympia.

Raven, I would not mind seeing Dephi/Meteora in two days if possible. Bus tours do this trip in two days or three days. On two days trip, it seems like they just briefly stop in Delphi, without going to the archeological site or museum. That's why I am not sure if two days are enough. In any case, I am interested to split the cost if possible, and we are available to do this tour on September 6, 7, 8 (two or three days). We only have these three days, because everything else is booked. Not sure if this works for you, because we need to get back to Athens after the tour, whereas you can continue on with your tour.
Too bad, we don't have one extra day; we could of split the entire tour with you.

In my opinion, Hydra and Napflio are not to be missed. I actually liked Hydra better than Santorini. And Napflio is beautiful, with lots to do and see. And within an hour or two you can visit so many ancient sites - Mycenea, Epidaurus, Ancient Corinth.

If you want a reasonably-priced and centrally located place to stay in the Pelo. I would recommend Tolo. My family and I had a two-bedroom apartment at the Paradise Lost for 125 euro per night. It was a great deal. We drove to Napflio most days, then hit some ancient sites. It was a great location. And Tolo is happening at night.

Raven - please do not miss Meteora or Delphi. I took a bus tour and both places stand out in my memory. I also did a 3-island cruise. A friend of mine just got back and she rented a car in Athens and drove to Delphi, by herself, I might add. So, I think it would be worth it to drive to both places. Your itinerary sounds great. I love Greece.

While in Greece and Macedonia for 2 weeks in June, we did the 4 day CHAT Tour that covered Delphi, Olmypia, etc. and Meteora (the only part of our trip that was escorted, so relax do-it-yourselfers :.) ) On a scale of 1-10 I'd give it a 5.

What I liked about it:
No worries about transportation or hotels.
The guide gives you a lot of background and history about the sites visited which would not be easy to learn/read on your own while touring.

What I didn't like about it:
Several meals were at typical, overpriced tourist rip-off rest stops.

Personally, I like tours when visiting an area for the first time, especially an area that has so much history.

no need to go to olympia for more than one day...the site and museum are amazing...but the town is just a little tourist trap...just came back from being there for a week for a conference...almost lost my mind from boredom.
