Hi all. We are looking for a hotel close to the Frankfurt airport with service to the airport, AND good service/access to get into Frankfurt, too.
We will have an entire evening free, and was wondering how long it would be to take public transit from an airport hotel into the city. If it is too cumbersome, or too long, there is nothing that I feel I "have" to see in Frankfurt, but we do have some free time and would like to go into the city if feasible.
We are a family of 4 and a Holiday Inn or Holiday Inn Express type hotel would be fine. I see there are a few of those - but not sure if one area aroud the airport is more convenient than others.

The city is only 10 minutes by train from the airport so you could easily take a hotel in the city centre. However, if you still want to stay near the airport, the Steigenberger has free shuttles to the airport about every 15 - 20 minutes, where you can easily catch a regional train to the city (trains run every 15 minutes). The atmosphere at the Steigenberger is a little businessy but it's quite OK. 5 stars, clean, efficient. Alternatively there are two hotels in the Squaire (directly at the airport), the Hilton Garden Inn and the Hilton Frankfurt Airport. I can't vouch for either of these as I've never stayed there but the location is quite appealing to me.
It is very easy to get to the city from the airport, and it's worth a look. Maybe go and have a meal at the Roemerberg or in Alt-Sachsenhausen.

Oh, forgot to mention that the shuttles to and from the Steigenberger take only about 5 - 10 minutes. Very convenient.

To some degree, it depends on how much money you want to spend. The hotels mentioned above are relatively expensive, but there is an IBIS Hotel at the airport that also has a free shuttle, and which is considerably cheaper.
However, when I am flying out of Frankfurt, I generally stay at either Mainz or Worms, two very attractive places that are connected to the airport by S-Bahn. Board the S-Bahn at Mainz, for example, and shortly thereafter get off at the airport station, and go up on the escalator directly to the Departure lounge. It could be easier, but I don't know how.
It is extremely easy and quick to get into Frankfurt. It would be a shame to pass up seeing one of the older & historic cities of Germany. I know people think it is nothing but skyscrapers and that is it, but nothing could be further from the truth. There is so much to see and do here.
The trains to the airport run every 15 min. and only take between 11-15 min. depending on which stop you are getting off at.
For budget hotels, there is a Holiday Inn Express near the train station, but I also like the Adina Apt. hotel, as they are neared the river and the center of town. Ibis City Center is also a good one and sits right on the river. It is about a 5 min. walk from the main train station.
The city is easy to walk around in, but public transporation is easy too. Strolling on the river is a treat when the weather is nice.
What time of year will you be here and what are the interests of you and your family?
Hi. We will be in Frankfurt in July. I like art museums and was very happy to note that the art museum is open late on Wednesday and Thursday evenings! We will only be in town one evening, so we wanted to stroll the most picturesque area to get a feel for the city. We know we wont' be able to see much.
I can highly recommend the Adina condo hotel in Frankfurt for your family. Full service reception, by the river, near downtown and great full buffet breakfast.
Great modern kitchen, 2 tvs, exceeded our expectations for the price.
