This is my first trip to Italy. Italy has always been my biggest dream destination. So, after waiting many years, my fiancé & I are getting married & he's taking me to Italy. We originally thought we would do a tour but quickly vetoed that plan. You see, this is our HONEYMOON!! I don't want to be stuck in a tour bus on my honeymoon. So, after looking on here & buying travel guides I think I can do this by myself. I am looking for advice from seasoned travelers preferably of where to stay on our honeymoon. I was going to stay 6nts in Rome & then take the train to Southern Italy & spend 5 nights somewhere like Positano. We want romantic rooms, would prefer apartments. Love terraces & balconies to enjoy the street noises & sites, There's just so much out there & not knowing the areas, I'm a bit overwhelmed. Can anyone help me plan the most wonderful romantic Italian honeymoon?

So 6 nights in Rome, 5 in Positano (not so easy to get an apartment there but rooms with balconies are doable); what about Florence?

What is your budget for accommodations?

Where are you departing the USA---I would look at flying into Naples first and return from Rome--it will save you a half day and some $$$. I like the concept for a honeymoon--just two destinations. WHEN is important.

@Tuscan..we arrive in Rome June 25. We originally wanted to stay in Venice, Florence , Rome, & then follow up with the sea & Amalfi C. But we decided that was too much in only 11days. So crossed off Venice & chose to Do Florence as a day trip from Rome. We are working on the weak US dollar so that will make things pretty expensive. I don't want to pay over $200 US for lodging & would prefer as low as possible but still a beautiful place. We are financing our own wedding so money is a bit tight.

Congratulations on your wedding and honeymoon! Italy is a wonderful destination, but unfortunately your budget is pretty low for Rome and Positano in June. I don't know much about renting apartments ( we always stay in hotels), but I think it might be tough to find one for $200 in the summer months, especially in Positano.

You might want to consider other towns on the AC that are less pricey than Positano like Praiano (spelling??) or Amalfi, but even there you may have trouble booking this late for June within your budget.

Sorry to be discouraging, but if you do find something reasonable book it ASAP!!

I meant to say don't want to pay over $200 a night in Rome & AC. Is that still too low a budget?

Even with the exchange rate, which is pretty good compared to a few years ago, I think you can find an apartment in Rome within your budget. Positano is going to be more difficult... It is a very expensive town. We've used Sleep in Italy for Rome apartments and were very pleased. I'd try to book ASAP if I were you.

Sorrento, while not actually on the AC, is less expensive than Positano, lovely in its own right, and a much better hub for day trips to places like Pompei, Herculaneum, and Naples. Just something to consider. Some of the smaller AC towns like Praiano and Atrani might be less expensive too, though the trade off is more isolation. Not necessarily a bad thing on your honeymoon!

@TexasAggie-Do the smaller towns that you mentioned have plenty of restaurants & cafes walking trails & things to do within walking distance or would we have to leave town on a bus to go places? I'm assuming they are still on the coast with beautiful views. What about beaches?

I agree you can find an apartment for less than 200 usd in Rome. I am renting from Sleep in Italy in Rome in October, so check back later to see my report if you wish, but they seem to have fine reviews. It sounds like you might like a more residential area (and Rome is easy to get around) so that will help you in your budget.
All of the towns on the AC have some restaurants, that is actually how I selected the town I stayed in--I did not want to take taxis at night. There are so many varied options on the AC (in terms of beaches, views, and just character) that you should spend some time researching the towns and determining what kind of place you want to stay. In that research, you're bound to come across the perfect place in your budget, and even if not Positano it will still be amazing.

With the crowds in summer, you want to make sure that the place you stay is a nice respite for you. An excellent way to find accommodations that fit your style is to read trip reports here. good luck!

I have been in Italy on last June, visiting Tuscany, Rome and the South. We stayed in Sorrento at Villa Oriana and I have to say the place is really romantic. What I enjoyed the most was the lemon trees scent blended up with the salted crisp trace of the sea entering the window. http://www.villaoriana.it/en
