I know for many people this is a tough question because they have stayed in many hotels in Germany. But, please give it a shot.

The question is not limited by city, location, or cost. Simply, what was your best hotel experience, or favorite hotel. Where was it, and why was it your favorite? Thanks much.

Sorry, i should have voluntered to go first. Mine was the Zugspitze in Garmisch. Beautiful room, great location to the village of garmisch, but not on the main street so quiet as well. I only paid about 65 euro/night last March.

The Hotel Haus Lippman in Beilstein was a great little place. We were shown a lovely room on the third floor, but when the management saw that I had a cane, they asked if we'd like a room on a lower floor. It was also very charming. We ate a couple of meals there, and they were excellent.


In Meersburg, we loved the Gasthof zum Bären. Our room had an oriel window, with a lovely view in both directions down the street.

Bad Hotel zum Hirsch in Baden Baden was also quite elegant.

It would have to be the Bischofschloss at Markdorf. This used to be the summer residence for the Prince Bishops of Constance. The room and bathroom were absolutely magnificent. It wasn't cheap by any means, one of our few splurges. The entire schloss was fabulous. Markdorf itself is only a small village. At about 8pm we could hear music outside so went out to investigate and spent a very enjoyable 1 1/2 hours listening to an impromptu concert. Apparently every Wednesday, whoever feels like it, turns up in the market square with their instruments to participate. It was lovely to see that such things still happen in this day of modern technology.

Our favorite is also Hotel Haus Lipmann in Beilstein on the Mosel. Nice room, beautiful view, entertaining host, good service, and the restaurant was excellent.

We just returned from Berlin and liked the Arcotel Velvet--one reason is that it has some unique twists in design, room layout, and amenities. In addition, service was very good, public transport is right outside the door (though many sights are within walking distance), and the area has a lot of restaurants and clubs--inluding a Lutter & Wegner connected to the hotel.

Hands down, my favorite so far is the Alt Heidelberg. I've been staying there for over 7 years, 2 or 3 times a year for anywhere from 1 night to 10. They always have a room for me, regardless of when I need it. There is a bowl of fruit and a bottle of water waiting for me - often with a note that says "Welcome Home". I even get Christmas cards from them. I almost always get the same room, and an apology when it's not available.

The hotel is part of the Best Western chain and is within a 5 minute to the old town. Rates range from 75E to 100E - depending on the season. The only time it goes higher is during the Formula 1 race in Hockenheim.

Without a doubt,my choice is the Schlosshotel Kronberg in Kronberg-in-Taunus just north of Frankfurt. This elegant hotel was once Friedrichshof castle, the home of Victoria, widow of Kaiser Friedrich III and daughter of Queen Victoria. It was built for her on the death of her husband in the style of a very opulent English country house. It has the only bar that I have ever been in with an original Turner on the wall. The meals in its baronial dining room are superb. It is not an inexpensive place to stay, but is well worth the cost for a special occasion.

Another, though not nearly as elegant or expensive, is Burg Windeck, near Baden-Baden. The hotel is at the base of a medieval castle ruins and has a panoramic view over the Rhine Valley from the foothills of the Black Forest. We celebrated our first wedding anniversary there many years ago and it remains a sentimental favourite.

I don't think the point of this thread is to criticize other people's opinions, but to find out which hotels people do like.

Of course, Fodors is an open forum so people can write anything they want on any thread they want. But it does seem counterproductive somehow to change the tone of the thread.

We were delighted with the Alte Thorschenke in Cochem on the Mosel. It is partly 14th century castle, and has medieval decor; the location was ideal. We also enjoyed the Uhland in Munich, which has been lauded on this site a great deal. One that is lesser known, which we found charming, was the Goldener Adler in Wittenberg. It was in the center of town, good breakfast, great beer, along with a friendly, helpful staff.

One place I have always wanted to go and stay was at the Alpenhof in Obertsdorf in the Allgau. Has anyone ever stayed there, or in the Obertsdorf area at another great resort?

We had a three-sided view of the Rhein from room 5 of Hotel Landsknecht in Sankt Goar. Lovely room and awesome view. Great restaurant and wine selections too. Owner was former Middle Rhein wine queen--so we were served by royalty.

Our favorite hotel in Germany remains the Dorint/Sofitel in Baden-Baden, Germany. And best of all, we're there right now! Just taking a break from a stroll around town before we head back outside for some gluhwein and wurst at the Christmas market and then a walk up to the top of one of the hills to watch the Geminid meteor shower. It's a clear, crisp night, not freezing cold.
The hotel is 5 star but surprisingly reasonable in price. We're paying 185€ for our room, which includes a huge champagne breakfast buffet, full use of their excellent spa facilities. We were upgraded to a junior suite with nice balcony at no extra charge. Tomorrow night, we're attending a Christmas concert at the BB concert house, in excellent seats arranged by the hotel. The hotel provides free chauffered service to and from the concert hall in its own brand new Audi A8.
Great value for money, IMO.

We liked the Hotel Haus Lipmann the best, for all the reasons previously stated.

A close second is Burg Hotel in Rothenburg - very lovely and reasonable, too, at about 150 euro for a small suite.

Let me just say that I have NEVER stayed in a bad hotel, Gasthaus, Pension, Zimmer Frei or Bauernhof in the 25 years I've been vacationing in Germany. Honestly. I suppose if I had to name a favorite I'd say "Eurener Hof" just outside Trier. Indoor pool, dark wood paneled rooms, plush bedding and a fantastic restaurant.

We mostly stayed in vacation apartments in Germany, which we loved, but of the hotels we stayed in our favorite would be the Kloster-Stuble in Rothenburg. Just a very charming, comfortable hotel in a great location and with one of the best breakfast spreads I have seen in Europe.
