We will be there 3 nights - arriving on a Wed. evening and flying out Saturday morning. My husband will go play St. Andrews on either Thursday or Friday. Is it worth me going w/ him? Even if I don't go to the golf course is there enough for me to do around there? Also where to stay in Edinburgh? Since I will only have 1 maybe 2 days there I want to get the most bang for my buck and stay in a good location that I can easily get to some of the major attractions from.

St Andrews has enough to keep you entertained while your husband plays around.

As for Edinburgh, it doesn't really matter where you stay as even the furthest flung bits of Edinburgh aren't more than 30 minutes by bus from the centre

Is your husband meaning to play the Old Course? Does he have a tee booked? If not, what year did you have in mind?

St Andrews is lovely and a high grade shopping town.

Staying in Edinburgh? How about the Crown Plaza or the Apex in the Grassmarket

My husband has something "in the works", but my money would be that he doesn't get on. I think he has a contact over there that he is hoping can pull some strings. Regardless if he gets on at St. Andrews or not I can count on him playing golf somewhere around Edinburgh during the 2 days we are in town.

Kel...St. Andrews is a charming university city..plenty to do, shop, eat, stroll, sightsee...I'm afraid your DH may be disappointed in the flat, uninteresting, boring Old course. Most USA, Canadian or Irish, Brit courses have it beat by plenty...but, then again, it's historical value can't be ignored. I honestly believe that his chances of getting on are minimal at best. Hope I'm wrong for his sake.

Besides the liklihood DH migh not get on the Old Course - <b>when</b> is your trip? It makes a HUGE re accomodations in Edinburgh.

And waht is your hotel budget - that makes a big difference too.

We fly to Manchester on June 30 arriving July 1. We will then go to the Lake District where we will be for 4 days - Sat-Tues nights. We are going because we have a friend who is playing to qualify for the Open at Solway on Silloth (or something like that). And Dh will be his caddy - yes the significance of golf in this trip is not lost on me, but I will have a break from my kids and plan to do my own thing when he hits the links. We are going to go to Edinburgh on Wed. and will fly our Saturday morning. I don't think we would want to pay more than $175 US, but under that would be even better. BTW what is the Grassmarket?

P.S. By my moniker you can guess I run so any good places in Edinburgh and the Lake District that you know of? 3-7 mile courses.

The Grassmarket is a street, kel. It's right in teh heart of the Old Town, and teh Apex has some rooms they advertise as &quot;castle View&quot;. There area lot of pubs and things and it is lively. I've stayed there (the hotel is on the other side of a wide street from the pubs) and have never had any disturbance. You should easily get a oom in that price range. Importantly, they have parking.

Caroline might help with running places- the Park? the Meadows?

The Park, i.e. Holyrood Park which surrounds the Palace, and the Meadows, are indeed good suggestions for running. Do you want a flattish course or more of a challenge ? (Bear in mind that not much of Edinburgh is flat, though.) I have a friend who is a very keen runner and whenever she stays with me, she runs from my place (wherever I've lived at the time) to *the top of Arthur's Seat* !!! She says there is a very good companionable atmosphere up there amongst all the mad people

Kelly.....when I was still in &quot;running&quot; condition, back in the early 90's, I ran the Royal Mile (High Street)...started at Holyrood and ran up hill to the Castle..then back down, and all around Holyrood, back up to Princes Street and over to the Georgian House park..great run on a cold day in March...just so happened that The Today Show with Bryant Gumbel and Katie was filming the show in the park across from Princes Street...I waved to them as I ran by, and Katie waved back.
