Dulles to Naples on Alitalia

Has anyone recently flown this route and is it as horrible as some of the reviews I've been reading, ie; long delays or cancellations, surly FAs and terrible airport staff, bad food, uncomfortable economy class seats, bad IFE, and restrictions against using your own portable DVD player or laptop.

I've flown Alitalia since 1958, and can assure you that some flights are awful, but the majority are uneventful. The major problems seem to be missing flight connections at MXP and missing baggage (best to take all luggage with you as carry-on).

I have not flown Alitalia so I cannot comment, although have heard some not so great things. But alternatively you can fly BA nonstop IAD-LHR then BA flies to NAP or I beleive BMI also flies to NAP from LHR and they are a partner with UA which of course has numerous flights from Dulles, a hub.

MWM1: How many people have flown this route??? Thousands?? Millions?? Out of those how many have recounted a "bad" experience? 10's???

If it is the cheapeast and most convenient way (and those things are the MOST important to you) then book it.

Be prepared for all eventualities OR be prepared to pay more..up to you.

Hi MWM1,
I just flew Alitalia in October in/out of Toronto. Most of the concerns you raise, are unfortunately true. There were delays on both legs of travel, Massimo (head FA) was a BEAR- not allowed to use any wireless electronics on this airline and food was sub-par.
On the positive side...no lost luggage and we did arrive safely on each side of the pond. The rest of the flight crew were a bit warmer as long as Massimo was not close by
This was my second time to fly with Alitalia....I'd give it a third go, if price and schedule were sufficient.
Seats in economy class were not by far, the worst I've ever sat in.

Cheers and best of luck with your decisions,
PV

Thanks for all your help - flying out of Dulles is most convenient for me and the price can't be beat- $600 R/T but I would consider flying out of Newark for the 777 and individual seat entertainment systems if there wasn't a huge difference in fare. I am "stuck" with Alitalia in order to use my CO FF miles.

Just make sure you have a nice, fat layover window in Milan.

I flew the Dulles to Milano/Malpensa route in May 2004-they just opened this route and has a special price promotion to inaugurate the new route--and seem to be keeping the prices low since then.

1. Yes the FAs are not the happiest bunch-but some can be nice, too. It all depends...but the head FA usually sets the tone.

2. The international flgihts were on time but internally they were very delayed that day. Fortunately, we did not have to connect to a flight. But I would leave a lot of time to transfer between flights. Also be sure that the connecting flight does not leave from Linnate! My boss booked the IAD/MXP with Alitalia with a connection onwards to Rome--and they booked the connector flight from Linnate. Fortuantely he noticed this and got them to change it. If you can't avoid flying from Linnate-allow even more time to get between airports.

3. Oh, yes. They are very strict on banning the use of CD players, laptops etc. on the flight! And the food was marginal a best. Bring your own is a good tactic-but the beverages were ok.

Hope this helps,
Judy

I use to love Alitalia but things have changed. Even my friends that live in Italy will not fly with them anymore unless there is no other choice which is usually not the case.
