Driving from Italy into Slovenia
We are planning to fly into Venice next month and would like to go from there into Slovenia and tour that country and then come back into Italy. Has anyone ever done that?
My main questions are as follows - can you take a rental car you got in italy into Slovenia without a problem and do you need any special documentation? International license etc?
Any help would be most appreciated!
Also, any suggestions on the highlights to see?

I did it in the other direction and had no problem. That is, I rented a car in Slovenia and took it into Italy with no problem. Nobody asked any questions. The last I heard, Italy and Slovenia are still at peace.
Actually, if you have any doubts, ask the car rental company.

Be sure to have the car rental company list Slovenia on the rental form. Also, see my previous posts, and the answers about the necessity of buying a Vignette for your rental, a necessity on every major road, but it does replace the tolls.

both Italy and Slovenia are EU members with no borders in between and no restrictions and you can take your car from italy into slovenia no problem. There would bed no insurance issues should anything happen to the car. You didn't specify how long you'll be traveling but here are some of the highlights that can easily feet in one week:
Slovenian coastal towns of Piran and Portoroz, Postojna cave,
Lipica stud farm, Ljubljana, lakes Bled and Bohinj, valley of river Soca and then back to Italy, all in that order

Hello BarbraR, per the law in Italy you need to have an International Drivers Permit to drive your rental car in Italy so you will want that anyway. Not familar with the rental car agreements regarding driving into Solvenia but you will want to check that out with whatever rental car company you rent from. I assume you know this but if you don't you can obtain the IDP from AAA. You will also want to take your regular drivers license with you as the IDP merely interprets your US State's drivers license into something like 15 languages. Have a wonderful trip, it sounds delightful!
