We want to see Elsinore and Fredriksborg for sure---what is the best way to see both? Are they close enough to be done min a day?

Yes you can do both and I have on a day trip from Copenhagen - take the train to Fredriksborg - the castle and lake are a short walk from the station - you can take a boat to the castle from the town center or of course walk -

then take the train direct from there to Helsingor (Elsinore in English) and do Hamlet's Castle and take another train from there straight back to Copenhagen.

Investigate buying some kind of Jutland area day pass - ask about that at train stations. For lots of info on Danish trains and these destinations check out www.budgeteuropetravel.com; www.ricksteves.com and www.seat61.com. The trains are very frequent and very nice.

Good Train advice from PalenQ...as always.

But if you decide to rent a car then the distances are not very far apart.

1. From Copenhagen to Hillerod Town where Frederiksborg Castle is ....distance is 24 miles.

2. From Hillerod to the Royal Castle( Where the Royal family lives) named Fredensborg is 6 miles and ...

3. . it is on the way to Helsingor where the Kronborg Castle is.
Distance from Hillerod to Helsingor is 15 miles.

At the Kronborg Castle look across the water to Sweden as this is the closest point between the 2 countries.

From Kronborg Castle back to Copenhagen is 27 miles.

4. From Kronborg Castle on the way back to Copenhagen you drive along what is nicknamed "The Copenhagen Riviera.

5. You will be passing right by the Karen Blixen House and Museum.
Stop and go inside and then walk to the back of the garden and she is buried under a huge Oak Tree.

Karen Blixen wrote the book Out of Africa.
Part of the movie was filmed here.

6. as you approach nearer to Copenhagen still driving along the coastline you will come upon Charlottenlung Castle .

7. A few miles further down along the road is the famous Tuborg Beer Factory.!!

8. You are now back in Copenhagen.

I drove I never took a train..,.but the choice is yours
Enjoy the trip

<<Investigate buying some kind of Jutland area day pass - ask about that at train stations.>> Neither castle is in Jutland.

<<At the Kronborg Castle look across the water to Sweden as this is the closest point between the 2 countries.>> You can have lunch on the ferry called Aurora which goes back and forth between Denmark and Sweden. It's a really inexpensive way to have lunch and look at the views. You can buy lunch tickets and just stay on the ferry back and forth, just remember to get off in the right country. If you have a car, you need to park it in Helsingoer as this only works for foot passengers obviously.

<<From Kronborg Castle on the way back to Copenhagen you drive along what is nicknamed "The Copenhagen Riviera.>> Only if you drive along the coastal road as opposed to the motorway. You need to take the road by the ferry terminal, the drive is beautiful, pass Snekkersten, Humlebaek, Louisiana, Klampenborg, Charlottenlund.

Yes that is another nice castle that could be good for a quick look on a long day - trains go the exact same route - I got off and just had a look at Fredensborg - can you visit it percy? and got back on the next train - don't remember how far castle was from train station.

PalenQ yes you can visit the grounds on certain days.
I had a private tour guide from Copenhagen.

This Castle loop tour was all arranged ahead of time.
