Crazy Trying to Rent a Car

Is everyone in the world going to Crete in September? I want to rent a car in Chania and return it in Heraklion but almost everything is booked. I wanted to book with Anna Cars but they have nothing for September. Finally I reserved a car with Hertz but their drop off and pick up locations are so confusing. I tried all the US companies and Eurocar and they were all booked. Are there any other good Greek companies that drop off and pick up at the hotel not the airport? Does anyone know the closest Hertz to the port in Chania near Theotokopoulou St?

If you do a google map search for Heraklion and zoom in just below the port you will see several car rental offices within easy reach of the ferries, including Avis Car Hire Crete, Kosmos Rent-A-Car, blue Sea Rent A Car And Bike, MegaRent, all of which are closer to the ferry port than Theotokopoulou St. Check them to see if any have offices in Chania with cars still available. Good Luck!

Try Autoway … HQ in Rethymnon, but they have delivered to us in Chania, and drop off in Heraklion no extra charge. For us, they deliver to the parking lot at the seafront, end of THeotokopoulu street (which is "no-cars" after 9 am), but driver came to our hotel, right at end of street, a 100 yard walk to car. Have used them 3x with good results, they match or beat the rates of the biggies (avis etc), and always gave us new cars in good condition.. Can't believe ALL agencies would be booked for ALL cars! Are you trying to get an automatic? that could be your problem …. most rental car fleets have very few automatics.

That is likely your issue - automatics can be few and far between in Europe.

Typo-my husband is looking forward to drive a manual!!!

Are there any companies to avoid?

Is the type of car an issue? I mean should we look for a jeep or in normal driving do the mid size cars hold up?

The cars are generally small like the Fiat Panda. You can go a size larger with a Hyundai Accent. Keep in mind some of the roads can be quite narrow so smaller is better.
A general rule of thumb is to get at least a 1.2 liter engine. Anything smaller will have a problem climbing hills.
The cars are tough. One thing to keep in mind that begin small there is minimal trunk room. Our accent only had room for one medium large suitcase and one carry on. If you bring more than that you will probably end up carting suitcases exposed in the back seat. Thats never a good idea anywhere.

Try Athens cars Crete. We have used them three times. The cars are two to four years old a little scratched up but are in good mechanical shape and they carry full insurance coverage.
We have picked up at Chania airport and dropped off at Heraklion airport and the ferry port.

A good site (not rental company but booking system) is CheapCarHire.gr. I looked up and there are several delivery points in Chania (Airport, port and hotel delivery). The prices are very good and there are available cars on September. Give it a try

P.S.: I hope you enjoy Crete! I love this island!
