Copenhagen Metro--tickets?

Do people actually buy tickets for the Copenhagen Metro? The trains are driverless and I rarely saw anyone buying tickets for the train. While riding the bus, many people had passes they showed the driver. Do most Danes have passes or are they riding without tickets?

According the Metro website, there are Metro Stewards to check tickets but I never once encountered one, though I did most of my travel on a Sunday.

I was never asked to show my tickets on the S-tog either.

It's interesting each time I've been in Paris, I've been asked serveral times to show my ticket/Carte Orange. They police stand in a line around a corner and check everyone that goes by.

I rode the Amsterdam metro once, and they had an inspectin of tickets but it was right after the turnstiles so anyone could see they were checking tickets before they entered.

My neice was in Copenhagen all last year and bought the passes. We bought tickets from the machine at the station. She DID ride without her pass at one point, got caught, and the fine was quite hefty..or so her father said. Ka Ching!!!!!!! So, it's the same old deal...you probably could ride without getting caught quite a few times but then ya just takes your chances and be ready to "pay the piper" when he rears his head.

Hi U,

The amount of hassle you go through for being caught without a valid metro or bus ticket is not worth the 1E charge.

I've lost count of the number of times I've been to Paris, and the RATP cops have never asked me to show a ticket. Maybe it's your shoes?

Well, I guess everyone has their OWN comfort level. One could probably ride quite a bit without being caught, but again if you are, be prepared to pay a hefty fine. I always got a ticket from the machine...the machines are really cool..they take debit or credit cards or will take money and give you change. The metro in Copenhagen is beautiful, very convenient and very clean and they need money to keep it as nice as it is, so I felt fine paying to ride.

A lot of locals in Europe who do daily travel on their transport systems buy passes just as folks do in the US since this is the money-saving strategy.

Undoubtedly there are people who cheat and don't pay to ride.

This "non-checking" also happens frequently on the rail route from the airport into downtown Amsterdam.

I lived in Copenhagen for over twenty years of summers and if you get caught without a ticket, it will be a hefty fine. Many things in Copenhagen,DK in general kind of run on an honors system. You're just expected to be honest and buy a ticket, but there are conductors who will occasionally check to catch the cheaters. Happy Travels!

We found that they spot checked sometimes, and sometimes it absolutely appeared to be on the honor system. Our first trip we didn't know to swipe on the platform. Our 2nd trip, we swiped, but on the return trip was ran for a train in the station and didn't swipe, and got "busted!" Oh, the conductor was not too pleased with us, even as I explained that we were from the US and we give our tickets to the conductor and we had run for the train and completely forgotten to swipe. She "cut us a break," but wasn't very nice about it.
