CDs to Versailles via train-help
How do I get from CDG airport to Versailles via train? The destination station would be Versailles-rive-droit if possible.
Then the next day I want to go via train from Versailles to Beaune...what is the best way?
Do I buy in advance?
This will be on May 28 and 29th.
Thank you for your help.

Take the RER from the airport to Saint-Michel-Notre Dame stop and transfer to RER line C to its terminus, right by the palace - I believe that that is Versailles-Rive Gauche station - there is also a Rive Droit and Chantiers stations.

Is there a reason you want the Rive Droit stop? If going to the palace, you want Rive Gauche.
To get from Versailles to Beaune, you have to go into Paris first. Versailles is on the commuter rail line. You'll need a train to get to Beaune.

I imagine to go from Versailles to Beaune, you will have to leave from Versailles Chantiers. Then you'll have to transfer in Paris to a train going to Beaune (from Gare de Lyon or Bercy). Or you could go from Versailles Rive Droite into Paris which arrives at a different train station, but you'd still have to transfer to get to Gare de Lyon or Bercy. Trains from Chantiers go to Montparnasse and from RD go to Austerlitz. Probably Austerlitz might be a little easier to get to Bercy or Gare de Lyon by RER/metro.
However, if you go to Austerlitz, you could just as easily not take the regular train but take the RER right into Austerlitz from Versailles Rive Gauche which is the station nearest the chateau.
It's up to you if you want to buy in advance, I don't think there are any discounts on that short a train run, and you can't buy RER tickets in advance, anyway.
YOu can get to Versailles Rive Gauche from CDG by taking RER B to St-Michel/ND and transferring to RER C. Otherwise, it is much more complicated as you'll have to take the RER to some station in Paris and then go to Austerlitz to take the regular train to Versailles RD.

Oops - Rive Droit - I make a mistake and told you how to go to River Gauche - direct trains from Paris Saint-Lazare station to Versailles-Rive Droit - right in the center of Versailles proper but not as close to the palace as Rive Gauche - CDG take RER A to Gare du Nord and change to RER E - take it to its terminus and follow signs for the walkway to Saint-Lazare - but a thru ticket CDG to Versailles Rive Droit at CDG RER ticket window.
to get to Beaune take RER C to Austerlitz and walk across the Seine on a pedestrian path that links it to Gare du Lyon, which has trains to Dijon, where you change for the sideline to Beaune.

The Rive Droite station is not near the palace entrance but Rive Gauche is so if their hotel is near the palace then it's Rive Gauche I believe you'd want to take - at least it is much closer to the palace than Rive-Droite is.

true, but I can imagine hotels near Rive Droite claiming they are near the palace.>
Well River Gauche station is not that far from the palace - depending on what you mean by palace - Versailles palace is a sprawling place with some appendages streching way to the north - wings that the public never visits and the palace park extends way over as well - so actually I have seen some hotels on the northern edge of the palace but which are a long hike from the main part of Versailles most tourists visit and the main entrance.

If the hotel is close to Rive Droite, the easiest way to go to Paris to take the train in Gare de Lyon is to jump on the first train out of Versailles Rive Droite toward Gare Saint Lazare in Paris and connect to the automated Metro Line 14 toward Gare de Lyon (roughly 1h from Versailles to GdL)

here's a radical suggestion - for your DD and SIL NOT to go all the way to Versailles to stay and then back the next day, but for them to stay in Paris.
if they are not arriving in Paris early enough for them to get into Versailles, I'm not sure why they are going there anyway.
if they are arriving in Paris early enough for them to get to Versailles for a visit, they could go straight to hotel, drop off cases, then go to Versailles. a hotel near the RER B/RER C stop at notre dame st michel would be best for that. then they just have to cross Paris to the Gare du Lyon the next morning.
IMO much, much easier.
