Bus ticket to Siena

We have 5 nights in Florence and want to do a day trip to Siena. As I understand it the bus station is the Sita Station near the SM Novella train station and we can get our tickets there.

Should I buy round trip tickets or just one way and buy our return tickets when we get to Siena? I don't know how long the train tickets are good for, or if they are for one particular train. Any idea when the last bus runs?

Thanks for your help.

Trains or buses - buy a return ticket - bus tickets I believe are good at least for that day if not forever. Trains to Siena from Florence take much longer and cost more - don't forget to validate your bus ticket when you get on the bus or by sticking it im machines before boarding.

Most Italian train tickets come with a mandatory seat reservation - full-fare tickets can be changed and used on any train subject to getting the requisite seat reservation but regional trains like to Pisa and Siena are good on any train for their validity period - ask when buying - as there are no seat reservations on regional trains. For lots of good info on Italian trains check www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.

You cn get nice discounts on high-speed inter-city trains if you buy well in advance online at www.trenitalia.com - but those tickets are train-specific and non-changeable non-refundable though I believe the fare can be applied to a more expensive full-fare ticket.

Oops. I meant bus tickets, not train tickets. We intend to take the bus from Florence to Siena and back. We are taking the train for a lot of our trip, and have scored some great ticket prices, but I understand that the Florence Siena trek is easier by bus, so that's the way we are going.

Thanks so much.

Yes bus is much quicker - due to hills trains take a very round about route. No reservations possible on buses I think - just show up and buy tickets - never heard of any problem getting on buses - there are so so many. And buses take you right up to near the top of this hill town - trains dump you off in a valley below the big pile Siena so graciously tops.

I too am interested in when the last bus from Siena returns to Florence. I looked at the bus schedule and from what I can determine it is 10:30 p.m. - can anyone verify if that's right?

Cpelk, I have read good reviews for a restaurant in Siena - Osteria Divo. I emailed to get their hours as we would like to have dinner there, hence my question about the last bus. The chef emailed back - lunch from 12:00 till 14:30 and for dinner from 19:00 till 22:30. Closed Tuesday. We will be there on Weds. Sept. 16. Wednesday is also the market day in Siena.

If you get any info on buses please share.
Thanks!
Char
