Brussels Airport Hotel €100 (or so)

I plan on flying into Brussels in late Sept. on the way to see my daughter in the Netherlands. I want to find a hotel near the airport (w/free airport shuttle) so I can drop off my luggage, check out the town for a day and then head to my daughters the next day. I'll be traveling alone, so I do want something decent but not pricey as I will be on a very limited budget. I really can't even afford this trip, but my daughter is expecting my first grandchild in early Sept. and I want to see the baby before the spring!

Any recommendations you might have for a hotel that is convenient to the airport and the train as well would be really appreciated. TIA!

Sofitel and Crowne Plaza both have hotels near the airport.
Having said that, Brussels airport is very close to the city, about 30min bus or taxi ride. So I think any hotels in central Brussels should work.

We missed a connecting flight in Brussels on the way home from Rome in March and had to stay the night. We ended up staying at the Holiday Inn Express. Its a short ride from the airport, and the shuttle is free and comes/goes every half an hour or so.

We're booked into the Sofitel Airport in December for a rate of 100€ exactly. It's a good airport hotel, you will get some luxury at that level, including a pool and fitness center.

However, you might also want to consider the NH Hotel at Brussels Airport as it's close to the Diegem train station which is on the airport line. Both the NH and Sofitel have free shuttles.

You do not have to limit yourself to getting into town via train. There is also the #12 airport bus route, which will take you into the EU district and the Luxembourg train station (not to be confused with Luxembourg city, this one is in Brussels!).

One other note: the train station to Brussels is in the airport itself on the bottom level. You could take the train into the Gare du Midi, catch the metro (#2 line, direction simonis) 3 stops up to Louise and stay at the Sofitel Toison d'Or, a very nice four star hotel that often has rooms available for 100€ per night. If you are planning to take the train to visit your daughter in the Netherlands, then this would be your best best as you'd be only a 5 minute subway ride from the train station.

Except for peak periods, you can usually find some excellent specials at Brussels hotels, even 4* hotels. Do a search under Accor Hotels as PalQ recommended or search on a site like www.hotel.de

FYI, Sofitel is opening a new hotel in the EU quarter next month. It will be served by the airport bus (it's close to the Schuman metro/train stop, which is on the #12 bus route). Perhaps they are running some specials.

Congrats on the upcoming arrival of your grandchild!

PalQ- Thanks, there looks to be some great options there!

W9London- That's an idea too, I'll check into it.

tcreath- thanks. It's funny, when I put in my dates for the HIE with a AAA discount, they don't have the availability, but when I try it with a FedGovt discount they do. Go figure!

BTilke- Thanks for the info. It really helps!

I live in Brussels and this is what I would do : take the train to the center of Brussels, just near the Grand Place (that is possible in Brussels). It will take you half an hour.

Near the Central Station are several good hotels (IBIS, novotel, etc) and you can visit the historical center of Brussel from there. So you won't have to carry your luggage very far.

If you're interested, I can give a few tips for monuments, restaurant, bars...

I just booked a room at the Holiday Inn Brussels Airport for 85 euro for three people (three day advance booking). They have a free shuttle to the airport, which has lockers for your luggage. I haven't stayed there before but I've stayed at the Holiday Inn Express next door and it was very good.

James, the more I think about it, although I'm a priority club member, I think I'd rather stay in a european hotel, even if it's a chain. I'm assuming that the HI and HIE are pretty much cookie cutter versions of the ones here. Of course, if the rate turns out to be too good to pass up, I'll reconsider! ;-)

Dirk, I'd love some suggestions! Keep in mind though, I'm a single woman of 52 so I don't want to go to the places where all the 20 or 30 somethings hang out! I will want simple meals, I don't feel comfortable going into a lot of restaurants on my own. Are there any good places with outdoor seating you could recommend? Oh and the Atomium (I think that's what it's called) is that hard to get to? Any suggestions you have for 'not to be missed' sights, would be wonderful! Thanks!

I'm sure others will recommend that you visit the main market place in the middle of old Brussels. It's a beautiful sight and the main "not-to-be-missed" site of Brussels. Go at night, if you can; very beautiful all lit up.

Hello Rapunzil,

Around the Central station there are also a few small hotels who are very good. Reservation is always needed.

The atomium is outside the city center. From Central station there's a metro going directly there (the Boudewijn metro or Heyzel station).

In front of the station are also tourist busses as you see in every European city - dubble deck with an open roof. These busses take you there as well.

There are a lot of places where you can eat well and for a low price, inside and outside but be ware of the tourist traps in the "rue des Bouchers".

You know, I can go on and on, but let me make a suggestion : me and my wife would be very happy to show you around (if we're free) for a few hours (we're 44 and 46) since we live nearby the "Grand Place".
If you're interested, just let us know when you arrive. It's always fun to meet people from another part of the world.

Dirk- I'm sorry it's taken so long for me to get back to this post. I'm not sure at the moment that I'll be going through Brussels. At the moment it is coming down to the price of airfare to a couple of different cities. My SIL wants me to fly into Germany, and for a couple of reasons, Cologne or Dusseldorf might be good choices, but it's all gonna come down to money.

I hit enter by mistake. If I do fly into Brussels, I would love to meet you and your wife if you are free while I'm there. That would be fabulous.
