Best way to travel from Karlsruhe, Germany to Venice, Italy?
Hey Everyone,
I'm planning my first trip to Eurpoe and was going to be in Karlsruhe, Germany visitng some family first. I then wanted to travel to Venice, Italy from Karlsruhe. Would anyone know what a cheap and efficient way to travel this distance would be? I guess I just need something that will get me where I need to go without anything fancy that I don't need. I'm kind of on a reasonable budget.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Hope you're all doing well.

Ryanair is the way we go, but a lot depends on how soon you would be traveling, as they are essentially cheaper the further out your trip. Looking at 6 months out, you can get a round trip ticket for under 60 euros.
Also, they don't have flights to Venice (Treviso) leaving from the Karlsruhe-Baden Baden Airport. So you would have to leave from Frankfurt-Hahn. You could take a bus from Heidelberg or have your relatives drive you the 2 hours to Frankfurt-Hahn. We've been able to snag them for half that price when they announce sales.
Several student teachers I have known used some kind of a structured rail pass through bahn.de, if you would want to look into taking the train but I think it is a lengthy trip (about 12 hours rail time?)If you've got the time, no problem.
Otherwise, you could check out flights leaving from nearby Stransbourg, France, but if there are any flights they won't come cheap.

You can check rail connections at bahn.com
As you will notice, there are two connections per day which require just one change (in Munich), one of them involves a sleeper train from Munich, the other travels by day.
Otherwise you can check whichbudget.com if there are cheap flights from nearby Stuttgart (plus you need to calculate the time/money it will cost to get from Karlsruhe to Stuttgart airport, also at bahn.com)
Finally, if Venice is not the only destination you plan to see in Italy and you also plan to go to Rome: There are low-budget flights with Ryanair.com from Karlsruhe airport to Rome Ciampino airport.

Hi marshjh50,
There is one rail connection that takes 10h04 with one change (in München); that seems like a pretty comfortable ride. Just get a book or two and lots of snacks, bring your iPod, and enjoy the scenery and the people-watching. When you get bored, you just walk the aisles of the train or bop into the snack bar/restaurant car for a bite to eat. The advance-purchase fare is 69 E.
There is another connection that takes 9h28 with two changes (Basel & Milan).
Again, if you have the time, it's a fun and relaxing way to travel.
Have fun!

Transferring to Hahn airport first, the flight including check-in time and everything, and transferring from Treviso airport into Venice will not consume notably less than 8 hours either. The train is likely to be the more comfortable option.
If you find a flight from Stuttgart to Venice, that would make sense, but going via Hahn/Treviso does not.
