Best way to go from Positano to Pompeii then to Rome? Pompeii private tour?
I am going to be in Positano this summer and I was advised by many of the people here on Fodors to hit Pompeii on the way to Rome rather than to take a day trip from Positano. I am just wondering if anyone can advise how to get there from Pompeii on public transportation and then how to get from Pompeii to Rome. Would I book this transportation in advance? I hear that the busses are insane in July but it looks like I may have to take a bus to a train to get to Pompeii? Would also love a general idea on cost. I think I was told this was a different train website then trentalia?
When going to Rome on train, what train station would I want to arrive at?
Should we book a private tour of Pompeii in advance or can we get tours that are good when we get there? I am being quoted around 110-130 euro for 2.5 hour tours (not including admission in). We don't care if our tour is private or in a group, but we do want to make sure that we enjoy our visit if we are planning to go.
IF we don't do Pompeii (only would cut it out if we cannot figure out a non-hectic way to get there), I would assume we would take the ferry to Salerno then train to Rome. Again I am not sure what train stop to take? Would this ticket be purchased off trentalia?

You would arrive in Naples from Rome on a Frecciarossa or similar train (high speed - takes 1 hour 10 min), then follow the blue signs that say 'Circumvesuviana' down some stairs and left along a concourse with shops on either side. At the end of this concourse you'll see a ticket office with a couple of windows. Tickets to Pompeii are around 4 euro. Buy your tickets here, take the stairs down to the platform and join the hundreds of others for the trip to Pompeii on this commuter train which will take you about 50 minutes.
Get off at Pompeii Scavi/Villa de Misteri (that's the name of the stop) Store your luggage at the station in the storage area inside the ticket office and down the stairs to the underpass to the other platform - it's where the toilets are.
Visit Pompeii - it will cost you 11 euro. Use on of the site's guides - they are 10 euro per person. Tours last two hours.
When you're done, carry on to the end of the line (in the same direction) to Sorrento. You'll need another ticket - about 2.20 euro. Take a bus to Positano. The SITA stop is nearby - good luck with that.
Just use the site guides. (I would prefer to spend 130 euro toward a private car service from Naples to Positano). Be prepared for the CV train to be packed and there is nowhere to store luggage so you have to keep it close and probably stand the whole way. It's a cheap way to get around but with bags, I prefer private car service or taxis.

Take the ferry from Positano to Sorrento, then take the Circumvesuviano train to Pompeii Scavi stop. You can store your luggage in the train station or, I understand, right at the entrance to Pompeii.
Then continue on the Circumvesuviano train to Napoli Centrale (Piazza Garibaldi) and walk upstairs to the Rome train. You'd go to Rome Termini (the central station) unless your hotel is nearer to Tiburtina station. There are also a couple of trains a day to Rome Ostiense
Can't help with the tour question.
Rome-Salerno is Trenitalia, and the stations would be the same as above.
In either case, when you book your hotel in Rome, ask them if unless it is apparent from the map which station you should go to in Roma.

Ugh - are you seeing Pompeii coming or going? My response was visiting on arrival.
If you're doing it in reverse, you can do as suggested in post # 2 but there are only two ferries per day from Positano to Sorrento at midday and 4pm so this may not suit.
