Positano to Rome via Pompeii
Does anyone know the best (easiest may not be cheapest) to get from Positano to Pompeii, do a tour there and then proceed on to Rome.
A private car and driver for the day is 400 Euro...a bit high, but easiest I imagine.
Other options might be.......
We will be travelling with luggage, rather not do "local" trains or bus....
I was thinking perhaps a combination of private driver, and Rail Naples to Rome?
Thanks.

Hi Rosemary - There is a DIRECT late-afternoon bus service (- dep. 17.45) from Pompeii to Rome.
This would be a convenient inexpensive option (Fare: € 16.50)
For details see:

Hope this helps ...

We used http://www.cuomonet.it/renato%20usa.htm
we had a really good experience. They drove us from Naples to Positano, and then Positano to Sorrento a week later.

I know that this is not responsive to the original inquiry, but other Fodorites should know that you can get from Positano to Pompei for a mere 2.50 Euros, by purchasing a "UNICO CAMPANIA Extraurbano E4 ticket" valid for 120 minutes of travel. You take the SITA bus from Positano to the Sorrento Circumvesuviana Station (60 minutes), then connect to the Circumvesuviana light rail to Pompei (30 minutes). You only need one ticket for this trip. You get off at the Pompei Scavi entrance to the Archeological site. On the ticket, you must write your departure point (Positano) and your destination (Pompei), and you must punch the ticket each time you board a moving vehicle.
2.50 Euros versus over 100 Euros for a private car and driver.
You may need to have porterage service between your Positano hotel and the SITA bus stop there.

It's overkill to try to do both sites in one day, but in terms of transportation, all you need to do is take the Circumvesuviana commuter train (direction of Naples), and get off at the Ercolano station, then walk about 10 minutes. Travel time is 19 minutes and you need to buy a "UNICO CAMPANIA Extraurbano E2 ticket" for 1.40 Euros. Trains run roughly every 30 minutes throughout the day.
I don't recommend doing both sites in one day. Pompei alone is extremely time consuming and tiring. I also recommend visiting Ercolano before Pompei, but on different days (if one wants to do both)

If you decide to do both in one day, buy a combo ticket at the first one you visit. It will save you a couple of euro. I think it was 20€ for the combo ticket when I was there last fall.
Another option for the area is the Campania Arte Card . The Arte Card Plus 3 day Tutta la Regione for 27€ gives you two admissions (a long list to chose from), discounts at the other sites and a 3 day transport pass for the region (trains/buses/trams/metro) from Naples to Paestum.

I agree with GAC about the overkill of Pompeii & Ercolano in one day! Pompeii is very tiring (I am in EXCELLENT physical shape) but found it to be overwhelming and I was happy that I chose each separately. Don't miss Ercolano!! Awesome!!

Thank you so much for all the information! We are leaving on the 8th and we can't wait. It will be a lonnnnng day but I think we are going to do Pompeii and Herculaneum in a single day. We are coming from Positano and want to spend time on the Amalfi coast as well. I've warned my travel companions about the death march!

The Guide I would recommend is Francesco at "Positano Adventure Walks" he is incredible in his knowledge and in's and outs of the entire area. www.positanoadventurewalks.com
He can do Pompei and Herculaneum in one day with lunch and fun.
