Best route from FCO to Orvieto

We will be arriving on Saturday and driving to Orvieto. What would be the best route with least traffic?

For most people the best route is taking the train, since it absolutely avoids traffic. Would you consider that?

Wish I could but, we have 2 cars and nine people. We'll need the cars while staying in Tuscany.

I've taken the train. Very easy.

I assume you'll want a car after Orvieto and I believe there is a Hertz at the train station.

I have already reserved two cars for my family at the airport. But, would love to know the best route from there.

There really is only one realistic route, and that is to take the airport access route to E90, which is basically the Beltway around Rome and just follow the signs for the A1 Autostrada North to Florence (Firenze). (A1 is also marked "E35" on many maps; just to confuse yankees) Then, making sure you are heading north towards Firenze and not south towards Napoli, you only have one "Orvieto" exit, very clearly marked. Your main challenge will actually be when you have finally come to the interior of Orvieto, when you'll come to an intersection of many roads, and none of the signs will make any sense. That's OK, place your vehicle in park, recline your drivers seat all the way, send your passengers on foot to reconnoiter with a 20 min time limit, and take a snooze. You will have earned it. Yes, there may be heavy traffic on this route, but it normally moves well. Other routes involve intersections and turns that, if mishandled, will take you far out of the way before you will have discovered your mistake. We stayed in southern Tuscany one time not far off this A1 Autostrada and I asked the locals if there were other routes to FCO, and they all looked at each other, and then slowly shook their heads, "Not recommended, Senore!" which I took for code for "very easy for Yankees to get lost" with the other routes.

We drove the other way, from Orvieto to Siena, on the SR2. If you can get yourselves on this route, it's really lovely.

docdan has given you some fine details and something else you can do between now & your departure is sit down on Saturdays and use google maps to ask for directions from FCO to Orvieto in real time. If its working properly, you'll see if any of the routes have Saturday construction and might indicate heavy traffic. Make sure to allow for the time difference, although Saturday construction would last all day
