Bavaria day trip via car

We are planning a 14 day trip into Munich and out of Budapest in late Nov. We have purchased a car that we will pick up in Munich and will have it to drive around for a day before we ship it home and join a river cruise in Nuremburg. We will spend four nights based in Munich to cut down on moving around to different hotels. What I am looking for are suggestions for a one day , driving day trip to one or two quaint towns to visit Christmas markets, also would like to have a portion of the driving to be on the Autobahn so that we can experience that as well. I think time wise, we would leave after rush hour and would plan to return to Munich in the evening. We have done the castles previously and since we will be river cruising I think we would prefer to go somewhere that is more inland. Any of you Germany experts have any suggestions?
