Bavaria
Hello all,
I'd like to get some comments on Bavaria. My wife and I will be there starting June 19 for less then a week.
What to see? Where to stay? Price range for hotel should be low to medium (I'm only sleeping there, so as long as it has a bed ).
I really wanted to go to Oberammergau and see the passion play that is done every 10 years but at this point think the area will be way too crowded and the prices too high. If anyone has ever seen it I would really love to hear what you have to say.
Any other general stuff about the area would be greatly appreaciated.

I can comment on the Passion Play having seen it in 2000 and holding tickets for a performance next year.
I am not sure I understand all this concern (from you and others who have posted) about the "crowds" in Oberammergau...yes the theatre holds about 5000 people and yes the village is not huge but if you have a play ticket you'll be IN THERE with the rest of us so what is the issue with that? As to the village itself before or after the performance..yes there will be lots of folks walking around and looking into those JILLIONS and JILLIONS of wood carver stores which all have basically the SAME STUFF for sale..but the village is charming and so are the interiors of some of the buildings such as the RC church and other places. The area ITSELF won't probably be any more or less crowded than usual so please don't stay away because of that..you will be cheating yourself.
Now, as to attending the Play itself...there may still be some individual tickets available..ones which do not require a two-night hotel plan and meals...the Play has a website..Google it...some ticket agencies may still have tickets..lots of the tickets are alloted to tour operators although there was a rumor earlier this year that sales weren't as good this year as last..but that may be unfounded.
What else to see? Are you at all interested in Munich itself? Plenty to see and do there.
if the tourist clog is a real issue for you here's another possibility and it is one that MOST US tourists don;t even think of or know about...whereas Neuschwanstein castle is of great interest and fame (inside is less than stellar IMO) and the nearby Linderhof is a wonderful visit, the LARGEST and IMO most interesting of all the Ludwig "builds" is the PALACE at Herrenchiemsee which is located between Munich and Salzburg (and easily reached by road or rail)...it is a big favorite with German travelers, is more elaborately and richly docorated than ANY of the others, etc.
How about Berchtesgaden? Garmisch?
Ask away...am sure others will chime in

Dukey,
Thank you for the reply. Don't you mean you have tickets this year?
Did you get the tickets with accomodations?
I'm not afraid of the crowds it's just that I saw the 2 night packages for $800 and thought that was quite steep when you can get single tickets for as low as 49 Euros. Just seems that things are jacked up becuase of the play. Plus you can only get tickets without accomodations on Saturday from what the web site says. I emailed them last week and have the forms to fill out.
