Hello. Does anyone who has been in Avignon during the July theatre festival have any thoughts on the experience? We plan to arrive by train in Avignon from Paris in early July and are thinking about spending one night there. I see that a very large theatre festival will be underway, which sounds potentially like a lot of fun - anyone have first hand knowledge to share? Thanks much for any insight. Some hotels already are booked!

I believe Kerouac (sp) was there this year and wrote a very detailed report on it.
Yes, I have been there every year for the past 15 years or so. This year there were about 60 spectacles in the official festival and more than 1500 in the fringe festival (I only go to the fringe festival).
I have a rental car when I go, so I stay in the suburbs, so I don't have to reserve my hotel more than 3 months in advance and I only pay about 50€.
Thanks Kerouac - sounds great
Anyway, here is what Avignon is like during the festival: http://tinyurl.com/ckwwscp
Oh my. This looks like something I really really want to do.
Kerouac, I didn't realize you had such an interest in theater. Do you go to interesting productions in Paris? I would like to hear about them. I have started to go to more theater on my occasional trips to Paris and I've gotten to the point where I have a pretty good chance of understanding most of what they say at least some of the time. And I'm always looking for ideas.
Many of the productions at Avignon show up in Paris later in the year (that is one of the main reasons for getting exposure in Avignon).
Perhaps you'd like to read my reviews of what I saw there this year (but if you hunt around you will also find my reviews of the previous two years as well) -- http://www.anyportinastorm.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=performance&thread=5997&page=1#140778
Thanks for the pictures Kerouac. How far in advance do you usually purchase tickets?
I generally buy my tickets 10 minutes in advance.
(Or if you are talking about train tickets, I get them about 2 months in advance -- I am not one of those obsessional "midnight 90 days in advance" buyers.)
