France Itinerary

We need to fill in one day/night on our trip. We will be in Forcalquier on a Sunday night in order to do the market on Monday. Then we have to be in Avignon Tuesday morning to catch our train back to Paris. Any suggestions on where to stay that Monday evening?

Thinking about Rousillon, Gordes, Menerbes...??

Prior to all this we would have been in St. Remy, couple of days in Camargue, Loumarin, Saignon, Apt and Cotignac.

It looks like you will have pretty much covered the area between Forcalquier and Avignon already and since you only have one night, I'd stay pretty close to Avignon or even in Avignon. Don't know how early you leave on Tuesday but its always easier to be close with less worries. Rousillon, Gordes and Menerbes are all great and have about the same transit time to Avignon.

I might suggest Gordes with the idea of staying at Ferme du Huppe. It is on the road between Joucas and Gordes. Menerbes and Rousillon are both pretty sleepy even at the peak of the season. There are extremely limitations of where to eat dinner. Ferme du Huppe: The room price includes breakfast (fresh baked pastries, butter, confitures and French press coffee). The dinner menu is delicious and you can be offered a substitute or two if needed. It's a striaght shot to Avignon.

Here's my one warning: make certain of where in Avignon (centre or further afield) you will be leaving from especially with return of a rental car. Centre is not the place to which you generally return a rental car.

If you stay in Avignon you will still have to return the rental car at the train station and then take a cab back into Avignon. I recommend this anyway rather than trying to park in Avignon.

We will be dropping off our car at the TGV station, south of Avignon. The day before we are looking for B&B near the hilltowns (Gordes, Menerbes, etc.) Hoping to find a small place with great hosts, at an affordable price.

The Ferme de la Huppe is a very nice place to stay, and the restaurant is excellent. It's convenient for visiting Ménerbes, Gordes, and Roussillon as the hotel is just a bit above the main road that runs through the Lubéron. No noise, though, as the hotel is set well back on a side road. The hotel is named for a gorgeous bird; if you're very lucky you might just see one, depending on the time of the year.
