Auberge de Presbytere in Saignon

Anyone know anything about this place? I came across it on the web and it sounds interesting. Outside Apt, I guess.

It is very nice and you can dine outside by the village fountain. The owner is a sweetheart and he gets his chevre from the nearby goat farm in Sivergues.

Would you stay there or just go there to eat? The hotel looks nice.

Okay, I guess the secret is out. We have stayed there three times. When we start up the hill to Saignon, it feels like going home. We have taken other couples there and everyone has loved it. The auberge is charming. Every room is different. Our favorite is "Bleu," with a little terrace and a fantastic north view. The owner of the auberge, Jean-Pierre, is a wonderful man. Incidentally, he is half French, half American, and lives part of the year in North Carolina. Food at the auberge is always good. We have not been able to go there the last couple of years and we miss it terribly. This village and this auberge are what Provence is all about, in our opinion. If you get there, please tell J-P hello from Mark Johnson.

We stayed one year in Saignon at a B&b and ate our meals at the Auberge.

Vedette, I feel the same! Saignon is a jewel which one wants to keep to yourself!

We also stayed at a B+B and had our meals at the Auberge - wunforgettable! I planned to return there this year - and then Sicily came in between. But next year....

I found out that I can pretty much have my choice of rooms at Auberge de Presbytere on the dates I am after. However, I also have the option of staying in Gordes instead on those nights (Hotel Mas des Romarins or Bastide de Gordes). Would you choose this over Gordes as far as a touring location for a couple of days? I know it isn't as central. We have some friends staying in Gordes at the same time. How far away is that?

CarolineM, you've zeroed in what is perhaps the only disadvantage of Saignon. It is on the east side of Apt. If you aim to visit places in the Luberon such as Bonnieux, Goult, Ménerbes, Roussillon, or Gordes, all are to the west. That means you will drive down the hill from Saignon and then drive through Apt each time you wish to explore any places to the west. Gordes, while only 25 kilometres to the northwest of Saignon, is really more central if you are interested in seeing the western part of the Luberon.

Having said that, I should mention that we spent a week in a rented house in Saignon a couple of years ago and would return in a heartbeat. For us, the drive through Apt certainly didn't outweigh the pleasure of Saignon. It's a charming village; vedette captures perfectly that sense of contentment that occurs when you drive up the hill from Apt.

I just wanted to give a huge THANK YOU to those of you who recommended this place. We just returned from France and spent 2 nights at Auberge du Presbytere. Ws stayed in the Fournil Room, which overlooked the fountain, and were enchanted by the place. We had dinner and a couple of breakfasts there, which were all fantastic. If I hadn't been encouraged to stay there, we may not have visited the town of Saignon at all, which would have been a shame. I am now obsessed with the fountain in the square and am wishing I had a painting of it to hang in my house. I will have to settle with the many photos I took after our wonderful evenings drinking wine by the fountain, and listening to it as we fell asleep. Thanks again!

Glad you enjoyed it CarolineM! If you go to Provenceweb.fr and select Vaucluse/Saignon you will find beautiful wallpaper you can download on your computer. It brings Saignon so close - unfortunately nothing of the fountain!

CarolineM, I'm delighted to hear that you enjoyed it. If you decide to return for a longer stay in Saignon, Henrietta Tayor offers a beautiful house for rent that overlooks that square. You can take a look at www.henriettataylor.com

Thank you for those tips. It will help me remember, and also help me plan my return trip someday.

Oh, I'm so thrilled to find this post! I have six nights booked at the Auberge de Presbytere in Saignon for June 07. Didn't know anything about it prior to booking, other than it met all of my requirements for a b&b, and the village looked lovely. So glad to learn it's as wonderful as as the website makes it appear!
