Bear in mind:
cheaper flights are cheaper for a reason: are the airports miles away from the cities they (nominally) serve, and how much does does onward transport cost (and how long does it take)?
cheapo airlines have extra charges and baggage restrictions: travel light with your own food at silly o'clock, and you can have a real bargain, but if you expect them to be flexible over baggage sizes and weights, you could find the overall cost rocketing up - especially if you don't discover until you reach the airport that you haven't read and conformed to their instructions.

Flying is your best option. Do the costing online through the Easyjet website, then try the same on an airline like British Airways. Use the same dates and times so you are comparing apples with apples. Also check they fly into the same airport. Easyjet is not as bad as Ryanair, which fly into some fairly remote airports but still call it Barcelona or Venice, when really it's not.
The cheap airlines have a lot of add-on costs but the traditional airlines, like BA, have very few so don't pay attention to the initial fare, look at the total cost including luggage, paying by credit card, paying to check in etc. Also it's cheaper to travel from Heathrow into central London than from Luton, Stansted or Gatwick, so you could factor that in.
The earlier you can book flights, the cheaper it will be. The cheap airlines have two seasons but if you decide on your airline and sign up for email alerts, they will tell you when your flights become available to book. Timetables for the summer season are on the Easyjet website.

Nice journey I made two years ago from Athens.
Coach or train to Patras and then ferry to Venice where I got the night train to Paris for connection to euro star for London. Nice journey but much cheaper by plane.I don't like flying.
