I'm trying to book our flight from US to Italy for this June. It's really expensive So I'm trying to be creative. I have seen lower flight fares to Germany and then a separate flight to Venice Italy. Has anyone done it this way? We are very flexible and won't have any checked luggage. My 9 yr old son and I will be staying 4 or 5 weeks in Verona. Really need to get the best deal on our flights. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Sometimes it's cheaper, sometimes it's not worth the effort. Check for low cost fares in Europe here: http://www.flylc.com/directall-en.asp and then add these fares to your RT to Germany.

Bear in mind that cheap airlines have different carry-on rules to legacy airlines. One piece of carry-on means just that, and the size/weight allowed is often also different.

Also by not doing it all on one ticket if your first flight is late then you could miss your second flight and be stranded, facing the expense of buying a ticket on the day - which could be 5 times higher than your pre-booked ticket.

Make sure also you are comparing like with like - so all fees, including for using a credit card for payment, etc are included in your calculations.

If you are staying in Verona then also look at flights direct to Verona. Transavia fly direct there from Amsterdam for instance, though not daily. You will also need to check departure times - sometimes they leave too early for you, though on Sundays they fly later. You could then do a quick visit to Amsterdam to kill the time.

I don't find any savings flying into a different country and booking a budget flight the rest of the way usually. You might look at flights into Zurich, Basel or Geneva. Book a discount train ticket in sbb.ch to Milan. You can often find these saver fares for 20-25 chf. Also check flights into Milan(mxp) or Bologna. Some of the cheapest flights I've seen to Europe recently have been to Brussels. Perhaps you could get a budget flight from there.

Thank you all for your responses, we are looking at flying from the US on June 18th. I considered the flight being delayed and though we might book with a big gap maybe even a day and see a little bit of the place we land. I hadn't thought to take a train.
