Has anyone ever just showed up at the Airport and been able to grab a standby flight for say a weekend in NYC or anyother destination. Is it a real $$$ savings this way.

There are no "bargains" for standby flights. That's something that existed about a zillion years ago. You have to buy a ticket nowadays.

Fran is correct, this is a myth.

Let me tell you how airlines work. If you show up last minute for a flight and buy a ticket you will pay a greatly inflated full fare price, usually thousands of dollars even if the flight is full.

Then they will offer some incentives to other travellers who have guaranteed seats (discounts off flights, updgrades). These incentives will be of lesser value than the money they made off you. And bingo they have mad a nice profit. The only exception is if the full fare flight was taken for bereavement purposes, in which you can usually get like a 75% discount off full fare with a copy of the death certificate or a similar document.

I don't even beleive that "standby" even exists in Canada any more.

However a number of the airlines offer "last minute" specials on their websites, or you can sign up for email "last mintue" specials.

Keith

Standby flights in Canada are only valid for those who are under 24 years of age and flights within Canada only.
