I would drop the car in Split and take the bus to Dubrovnik. The scenery along that coastline is absolutely stunning, but a driver would not be able to appreciate it, as the road itself really requires attention. The bus is comfortable and the views are magnificent (sit on the right). And the car won't be an advantage in Dubrovnik -- and could actually complicate your time there.
When visiting the Plitvice Lakes, I strongly recommend that you start at the lowest part of the park so you are facing the falls as you proceed.
Enjoy!

Don't see when you are travelling.
Great trip a bit of beautiful nature in NP Plitvice, sun and beaches on the island Vis and culture in Dubrovnik! I think you've made a good choice here.
In the summer months it can be quite busy on Fridays and Saturdays on the highway at the toll booths, the ferry and for the entrance to NP Plitvice. So it is good to start there early, it is still not possible to buy tickets to the park online, but the Croatian National parks have a good website parkovihrvatske.hr/homepage where you can find a lot of info.
Of coarse you can go by bus, because than you can look around, but on the other hand by car you can stop somewhere along the way and are more flexible. But as above mentioned it is not easy to get around Dubrovnik by car, I guess it depend on where you are staying in or around Dubrovnik and whether there is space for parking.
When I was in Dubrovnik we left the car at the hotel and could walk into the old town of Dubrovnik, but you pay a lot for parking, when you are further away you can go from your hotel by bus transfer to the old town. The airport of Dubrovnik is located about 15km south of Dubrovnik, so you can go there either by transfer bus or car.
Hope this helps a bit?

If you are traveling in Croatia at summer time, you shuolud visit Vis (blue cave), Dubrovnik (arboretum, Ston, Trsteno) Split, and Np Plitvice... ma recommendation is to take a Game of thrones tour in Split and Dubrovnik because you can visit film locations (they are amazing) and also you can visit whole city (split and Dubrovnik) and learn about history of the towns.
