5 days in Rome - Itineray Suggestions??
My sister and I are flying to Rome May 23, but going directly to Civitavecchia for one night then leaving on the 25th on a Western Mediterranean cruise returning on June 1. We are staying in Rome until June 6, have decided to not do any side trips but try to get as much out of Rome as we can in those few days. We are both in our mid 50's and quite mobile, so can walk around to see things up close rather than driving on buses all the time.
Our last night we are booked into a hotel near the airport for convenience, but from the 1st to the 4th we are staying at a hotel about 20 minutes walk from the Colosseum.
We have booked the OMNIA Vatican and Rome card which includes the hop on hop off tour for 3 days, as well as access to public transit, and fast track admission to several major attractions, St Peter's, the Vatican museum, the Colosseum, Forum, etc.
Any suggestions as to order of visits, must see's, best times of the day to go to different attractions, etc. We want to experience Rome, not just jam in as many attractions as possible, so don't necessarily want to see everything, we want to also enjoy seeing the places we visit. Just walking around looking at the ancient architecture will be astounding!
I appreciate any input and suggestions!! Thanks!

Definitely visit Villa Borghese and the Borghese Gallery(you need to get tickets in advance -- the Bernini sculptures are revelatory).Piazza Navona was our favorite square(have a tartufo at Tre Scalini). Piazza del Popolo. The Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. The Pantheon. We liked the gelato at San Crispino and Giolitti.

Uma's suggestions are all on target. You want to spend some quality time just wandering . . . Reserve everything as early as possible. Early or late are always the best times to visit the 'greatest hits' & even then you can expect mayhem.

<<<Our last night we are booked into a hotel near the airport for convenience,>>>
Better to spend your last night in Rome and I'm sure others will agree.
If it's an early AM pre-rush hour on a weekday just hire a car and driver 40-50e it's 30min tops.
If later and worried about traffic just taxi to the Termini train station and take the direct train (2x per hour ~30min).
<<<but from the 1st to the 4th we are staying at a hotel about 20 minutes walk from the Colosseum.>>>
Usually that's the phrase Termini area hotels use?
I have stayed 8x near Termini for the cost savings.
If that is indeed your hotel's location and you would like a better Rome experience you might want to consider something more in the historic center.
But if not the area is fine and I just mentioned it in case a bit more cost isn't an issue for a nicer location.
Anyway I'd post the hotel's name so others can chime-in on whatever its location is.
