4 days Amalfi Coast this summer- itinerary, car vs no car, etc
Hi,
We are planning on going to the Amalfi Coast for 4 nights this summer, 2-3 nights in Ravello and 1-2 nights in Capri. We are going to Rome first and then driving to Pompeii followed by the Amalfi Coast.... So:
- What should we do first, Capri or Ravello? From Pompeii do we drive to Sorrento, take the ferry to Capri or is it easier to drive to Ravello?
- Do we need the car while at the Amalfi Coast? I don't think we can use the car in Capri.
- If we don't have a car, is it easy to take a taxi from say Positano to Ravello? How would we get from Ravello to somewhere to take a train back to Rome?
Thanks so much!

Ravello may be an inconvenient base, but it is glorious!
"What should we do first, Capri or Ravello?" You might check the Ravello concert series to see if you can catch a performance and if so, whether it makes a difference for your timing.

You don't need a car to visit this area. It could be an encumbrance. Consider taking the train from Rome to Pompeii. The Rough Guide provides very good coverage of your transportation options.

Ravello is no place to avoid the crowds. They gravitate there like kids to donuts. It's also mostly pedestrian so a car will be an encumbrance - especially if you want to visit Capri. What will you do with the car?
To get from Ravello to Positano without it costing you a fortune in cabs, take the bus to Amalfi and then change for another bus to Positano. Better still - take the ferry from Amalfi to Positano. The coast from the water is the way it's meant to be seen and appreciated. Schedule is here:

"If I stay in Ravello, how would I get to Positano? Bus or taxi?"
Bus to Amalfi, bus or ferry to Positano. OR taxi. Again, sounds like you need a decent guidebook. The cost will be nugatory in comparison to the cost of your trip.

We stayed in Ravello our first trip and left after 2 days---too inconvenient. We have been back 3 times since and have stayed in Sorrento, Positano, and Praiano. What do you plan to do and see???? It all depends.
And, get a good guide book. I am not sure you understand the geography.

It will be hard for many people to help precisely with your questions about transportation and location without knowing what dates in summer you will be there.
Also, if you are concerned about "touristy" -- and it is a perfectly reasonable travel preference -- consider driving to the Cilento after Pompei instead of the Amalfi coast -- but then you will not see Positano or Capri if that is important to you.

Absolutely no need for a car. If you are interested in seeing Positano and Amalfi, it would make more sense to stay in either Positano or Amalfi. But if your heart is set on Ravello, you can reach Positano and Amalfi via bus/ferry combo.
