My husband and I will be in Rome 4 nights, 3 days in late Sept. and we are making our plans now on what we would like to do while we are there. There is so much to see in Rome we are trying to narrow down the list so we can just enjoy the area instead of trying to stuff in too many sites/museums.
Any ideas are welcome! We were planning to cover the Vatican, St. Peter's on Sat. as I did get tickets to the Scavi tour. Thanks!

I would suggest a good small group tour of the Vatican Museums and St. Peters, and another of the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine.

The rest of the time, enjoy some relaxed time walking through different areas of the historical center and stopping for a caffe, gelato or drink on a piazza that strikes your fancy.

Enjoy the food.
And don't pass up an open church. You may discover, besides the architecture of the church itself, a wonderful painting, fresco or sculpture.

Take a night tour of Rome , it is absolutely beautiful.Also, Mirabilus tours (Daniella Hunt0 gives a terrific tour of the Vatican. Look up customer reviews.

An Icon Tour of the Roman Forum is a fabulous way to see the area. Plus, they help you skip the long ticket lines... Here is a link: www.icontours.com. There is also more info about our walk (and other ideas) in my trip report from 2005. =)

One of our favorite places in Rome last year was the Borghese Gallery. The paintings were wonderful; Bernini's sculptures a revelation.
The park is lovely. You will need to reserve tickets ahead for a 2 hour timed entry. The Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Forum, Colosseum, Palatine Hill.
Agree with iluvitaly; enjoy the great food and make frequent gelato stops!

I am not sure from your post whether you are trying to do the Scavi tour and St peter's plus the Vatican museums on the same day. I think it works best to do these on two separate days if possible. The museums take several hours minimum to see the Raphael rooms, Sistene Chapel plus a little more of the amazing collection
However, with only 3 days you may not want to travel back and forth twice.
(now that I have said this I realize we don't know what neighborhood you are staying in)

I would suggest another day to see the major Roman sites--at least the forum and the colosseum; the Palatine is also very interesting but probably the one to cut out if you don't feel you have time.

I would go at least once to the Piazza navona and piazza della rotunda (Pantheon) area. There are some nice smaller churches to visit in these areas (San Luigi dei Francesci with 3 great Caravaggio paintings and Santa Maria sopra Minerva, for example) I would plan on a few churches you would really like to see in addition to st. Peter's.

you could get a taste for the Trastevere or old Jewish ghetto neighborhoods by eating there one night.

there is a hop on/hop off bus of the city center you might want to use. A lot of people find it helpful.

Thanks for the ideas. Anyone that mentioned the night/twilight tours recommend any specific companies? There is one that is 2-3 hours that we are considering and we heard they can be great. Any additional thoughts are welcome.
