10 Days in the black forest in October

Hello,
My girlfriend and I will be in the black forest in October for about 10 days.
We will have a car and will like to stay at one of the towns/ villages and take one day trips.
We love hiking, biking, nature and all that stuff.

Can you guys recommend us things to see and places to be?

It has to be one day trips.

Thanks.

Be aware that the Black Forest has a north-south extension of 150km, so makes a big difference whether you have your base in the northern, middle or southern part of the Black Forest.

My favourite area is the High Black Forest around the Feldberg in the Southern section. You will have lakes, and forests and beautiful scenery.

Often, in October you have warm, sunny days in the mountains while there is fog and rain down in the Rhine valley.

Places to stay:
- Titisee is a pretty, lively town which is always crowded with tourists, many of them from China
- Schluchsee is a quieter town on the largest lake in the Black Forest, you find accomodation of any kind and good hiking opportunities
- one of my favourites is Menzenschwand, a small village with many traditional houses and a wonderful public pool and spa in a secluded valley

What to do and see:
- on a clear day, ride up the Feldberg and wander over the mountain top, a wonderful hike goes down to the scenic Feldsee
- you may rent a boat on the Schluchsee (they have various types of boats)
- hike through the Wutach Canyon
- visit the Vogtsbauernhof open-air museum and the cuckoo clock factories in Triberg
- visit the monastery in Sankt Blasien
- see the waterfall in Todtnau and do some scenic driving in the lovely region south of the Feldberg (from the Feldberg Pass drive down to Todtnau, Todtmoos, Bernau - you will see lovely landscape)
- in Badenweiler, enjoy the atmosphere of a spa town and visit Bürgeln Castle
- visit the (cuckoo) clock museum in Furtwangen
- on a rainy day, soak in the Radon Bad in Menzenschwand
- you may leave the Black Forest for daytrips to
- Freiburg - magnificent cathedral, cute old town
- Basel - for a taste of Switzerland and an excellent art museum
- Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein if you like modern design
- Zürich for another taste of Switzerland
- Colmar with a picturesque old town and great museums and the surrounding wine villages of Alsace
