What can Fodorites tell me about the Royal Princess?
We are sailing on the Royal Princess for a trip around South America.
We know nothing about the Princess line.
How is the food?
What about the shows??
We really aren't as dumb as it looks, we have traveled before but not on that line.
The ship seems about the right size 1200+passengers.
Any comments appreciated.:-B

We are seriously considering the Jan 12 on the same ship. I have exactly the same questions, well, almost! We sailed the Golden Princess last summer, but I think that the Royal is a whole new ballgame. Much smaller (which is ok) and much older. I'm wondering if she has been refitted since 1984; surely she has. I noticed that the new Princess innovations, such as Personal Choice are not available on her either. But we are so interested in the itinerary that it will weigh very heavy. So I'll be reading your thread with great interest.

According to my brochure the Royal Princess was refurbished in 2001.
I have mixed feelings about the Assigned Seating vs Personal Choice.
It would be bad to be with some spook but we met a couple on our Panama Cruise that we have since traveled with twice.:-B

We have sailed on the RP 4 times (did the Buenos Aires to Valaparaiso to Ft. Lauderdale 32day sail last March. It is one of our favorite ships because of the size and ambiance of it. She doesn't offer PC dining because there is only 1 dining room (plus the upstairs buffet, of course). If you are concerned about seatmates at dinner request a table for 2. We were very fortunate on this last long cruise as we were seated with 2 other couples doing the same thing and we had a great time with them. The Maitre 'd asked if we wanted to change tables on arrival in Val. and sit with others on the next segment, but we all said no at the same time - but we would like a window table - and we got it.
I have found the food fine (I have also found that if you develop a friendly relationship with your server and he/she recommends something, it is usually good). We are not fussy eaters and do not expect gourmet food and have seldom sent something back.
The shows are sometimes excellent, sometimes just good. I don't care for magicians or comedians and usually skip them.
Remember she is a smaller ship and doesn't have the glitz of the newer huge ones but we love her. All of the regular cabins are the same regardless of location. Balcony cabins aren't worth it on this cruise and you can either have the beds in the twin formation and use the balcony, or in a queen and not use the balcony. Mini-suites are great. It is a fascinating cruise - enjoy.

There isn't much choice left on the date we need - no balconies, but then - as Charli says, maybe that's ok on this ship! Oh, the mini-suites are gone too.

I sailed on the Royal Princess in 2000---Top of the World cruise. We went to places like Iceland,Alseund Norway, Spitsbergen, North Cape and down the coast of Norway back to Dover. Being 18 days long and the unusual iternary, we had very elderly passengers and only 4 children aboard. It was a very nice cruise, but I am very tolerant of wheelchairs, canes, etc.
There were slow-paced activities onboard and the food was fine (not excellent). The staff and crew was very helpful to all and they had pleasing personalities. I do remember an alternative dining venue, but I prefer the main dining room.
It is easy to find your way around this size of ship and it makes it easier to run into the same people again and again. If you are looking for modern tech and glitz and never-ending activities, this cruise ship is probably not for you.
The shows were good and I enjoyed the lecture series they had onboard.
I think the trip around South America sounds like one I would like to do sometime also.
