Rome to port at Civitavecchia

What is the best way to do this? I know transportation is available at the airport, but anyone know if we can pick it up somewhere else in Rome? I really don't want to pay an arm and a leg, but realize may be necessary. IF we took a train to the port city, how easy woud it be to get from the station to the actual embarking area? Any ideas or do I just need to call the cruise line for ideas? Thanks. Judy

Do a little searching. This question is asked and answered every day. Least expensive way and nearly the most convenient is the train from airport to the Rome train station and the train from there to Civitavecchia. The port entrance is about a mile from the train -- easy walk -- all flat along the beach. And a port shuttle will take you to your ship.

Take the train - cheap & efficient. Your cruise line may even give you a handout with a map & schedule.

We took a Crystal cruise a while ago, and actually took their "pre cruise" tour. It was delightful. We did a little sightseeing to places that were fabulous, had an amazing lunch at a vineyard overlooking a gorgeous lake, and the bus then drove right up to the ship and we got right on. It was a wonderful day, and really started the cruise in a very relaxed and fun manner.... Not sure what cruise line you're using, but they probably all have something like that...

mickrory -- That's a much better price than
what I have been told--65 per person! How did you contact Rome Shuttle?

Debi-- Cruisin with Carnival leaving Civit June 3 for 2 weeks.

frmden and QueenofDaNile--Still mulling all the

options. Really just two--train or shuttle.

Thanks. Judy

Best site seems to be www.civitavecchiaport. org and you can chose the cruise line you are on for the best info.

Or www.rometoolkit.com for directions.

We always take the train to and from the port.

Last time the ship arrived in port around 5am, because the luggage area was between the ship and the exit of the ship's dock, we had to wait until all the luggage was transported off the ship to the luggage area. So all of us with just carryon, had to wait.

Then it was raining.

You can only leave the dock area by ship's transportation. Then we were dropped off at the bus depot of sorts (really just a large parking lot). Although the ship docked early (5am), buses/transportation from the bus depot do not start until 8am.

So pax were annoyed (actually really pissed) that we had to wait for the luggage to be taken off the ship even though it was not our luggage, got on the ship bus to the bus depot, only to find no means of transportation to the train station as it was around 630am-7am and it was raining.

The local grapevine was apparently busy as gypsy cabs showed up and we were able to grab one of them. So make a plan. and make sure you have small enough euro so that you don't have to overpay because they don't have change.

And know that although you can take the bus from the depot to the train station, you will need euro, which you probably still have but just sayin'.
