What a wonderful, generous idea! The first thing you need to know is that most cruise lines charge a single supplement for a passenger traveling solo -- it can be as much as 200%! So maybe you should consider going with her. Second, how old is your Mom and where are you thinking of sending her? One of the best cruise lines for a single woman is Crystal Cruises. It is on the expensive side, but they have Gentlement Hosts, who ask the single ladies to dance., and the staff goes out of their way to make a single woman traveler feel that she is special. Also, on Crystal (and many other cruise lines) tables are assigned, so she will always have dinner companions, and very often friendships are formed at the dinner table. I would avoid the lines that have open seating at dinner: Radisson, Norwegian, Silversea, etc. Feel free to email me with your questions.
Tiffany

Very nice thing you are doing. My wife and I sailed on Holland America and they also had gentlemen hosts who danced with the ladies. We saw these guys every night as we like to dance. They were a nice group of men. Most looked over 55, but great dancers. For the most part they looked like law professors. If your Mom likes to dance, and is over 55, this may be a good cruise line for her. I agree with the above poster too. Crystal is magnificent but is a little expensive. If you have the bucks to spend, then go for it.

Have you considered a Windjammer Cruise? There are usually at least several single people. WJ is not like a huge cruise ship...that would be comparing apples to oranges. They are small sailing ships...up to 125 passengers. No casino, formal nights, pool, etc. but you are at a different island with plenty of beaches every day. The passengers are usually very well traveled independent people. You never, ever have to dress up...very relaxing. They do offer single shares where they'll match another single person to share with you. We just went on a big, foo-foo ship with 2,498 others and thought it was a nightmare. Service was awful, crew & officers hardly ever smiled nor acknowledged you unless they had to. This was my second foo-foo cruise and I'll take a Windjammer anytime! You might want to look into it.
