Cruise to Alaska - Seasickness

I am very keen to take one of the cruises from Vancouver to Alaska - but suffer from sea-sickness and wondered just how rough it normally is on the Inside Passage.
Obviously I would do better on a larger vessel - for more stability -which would you recommend??

Sorry, all cruiseships sail outside of the Inside Passage, at some point, and you most certainly can encounter rough sailing. I suggest you consult your health care provider and see what preventions they recommmend.

You can mitigate the damage by getting a mid-ship cabin and by sailing on a larger vessel, but BudgetQueen is right that there will almost certainly be at least one day when you may encounter rough weather on any cruise. However, I'd add that my parents went to Alaska last year on a Carnival ship, and my dad was never sick ... not even for a day, and he is also prone to seasickness. A lot of it is the luck of the draw, but having a well-placed cabin on a large ship does help.

Get seabands and try those; they're very effective, especially if you don't want to take drugs, but a seasickness patch is also very effective.

Thank you for the information - it was as I thought - but will certainly give it a go at some stage soon.

I'm going to Alaska from San Francisco, and worry already about getting sick. Will take 1/2 a pharmacy with me My doctor recommended Bonine, and no patches.

Ditto on the sea bands- I would not have been able to cruise as much as I have without wearing them.

If you're into acupuncture, that works too. Just mention that you'll be traveling and are prone to seasickness, and they'll treat you accordingly. (The meridian points are at the same place on the wrists where you place the seabands.)

In talking to fellow cruisers, it seems that different things work for different people. Some said they felt too drowsy when they wore the patch or took Bonine, yet others said they were fine with them. You might wanna bring along a few different things to see which works best for you.

I have a severe motion sickness issue (inner ear problem) - and the patch is the only thing that works for me. That being said - I've used them for years, and I don't have a problem with them (they are not for everyone). We did Alaska last year (Vancouver to Seward) - LOVED IT!!!!!!!! We did Celebrity - it was topnotch...

We sailed from San Francisco a couple of years ago and I was fine until we were on the way back to California. I've cruised many times and had never been seasick, but this time it hit me. I didn't bother going to see the doctor, but understand the lines were long. I just toughed it out, took some ginger and ate some saltines. I was okay by dinnertime, but the dining room was much emptier than usual.

Have fun Faina--we loved our trip. It was so wonderful to just drive across the bridge, go to the pier and board. No flights, plane changes, etc. and concern about missing the ship, or our luggage being lost.

Incidentally, we did a Viking River Cruise to Russia last year and it was fabulous. Loved St. Petersburg in particular, but also enjoyed Moscow and the smaller palces we visited. Would love to return to Russia someday--so many places, so little time & money. sigh

Hello,
Have you ever heard of the Zija beverage? It is a 100% natural supplement, and it has helped us many times in the past with motion sickness and other ailments while traveling. If interested, please let us know. Thanks

I am another "Sea Band" advocate. They work the charm for my husband and I on all our cruises. He leaves them on the entire cruise and even for a few days after. I take them off after the rought stuff but this time I did have to put them on for a few days after returning home as the floor was moving when I didnt. They work almost instantly.

I don't know if this really works but I've read it several places. Of all things eat a green apple. The ginger capsules work well too!!! Happy cruising!!!
