My husband and I just booked a week in May at the Tamarind Beach Hotel on Canouan in the Grenadines. Has anyone been there -- either the hotel or the island? How is the snorkling there? What about scuba diving? I'd appreciate any info.

The Tamarind Hotel on Canouan was originally built as accommodation for the senior folks involved in building the much larger Carenage resort. It is on a beautiful beach. Canouan itself is very low key...population about 750. Very laid back and quiet.

Don't miss the opportunity to go on a snorkelling excursion to the Tobago Cays nearby.

We were at Carenage Bay Resort when it was owned by Rosewood. It's now called the Ruffles (spelling) and will be reopen this June/July. We passed by Tamarind and was not really that impressed (sorry...). The island is rather poor and not much to see/do. The best thing is go visit other smaller islands nearby on boat. We're going back to the Ruffles in Nov as the resort is AMAZING.....

We have booked a 20 night holiday stay at the Tamarind Beach hotel during January and February 2005. If anyone has stayed there and has any information (good or bad) we would be very interested to hear it. We are worried that the quality of the accommodation will not be up to the standards of the Far East!

The Tamarind is nice -- but if you can handle the extra money, I'd definitely go to the Raffles Resort -- especially for 20 nights. Raffles is a huge isolated paradise with every ammenity imaginable and perfect beaches. Tamarind is a really nice hotel right off of the main village and on The Moorings yacht basin. The village is quite poor and doesn't have much to offer.

As I believe Tamarind and Raffles are owned by the same developer, CRD, you should be able to switch quite easily. You could also stay at Tamarind and take the shuttle to Raffles to use their facilities during the day -- I'm not sure what Raffles charges Tamarind guests-- but it's worth checking into
