Riu Merengue in DR

I am so excited!! I just booked a trip to the Dominican Republic to the Riu Merengue for a week. This resort seems to have very good reviews for the most part. Anybody have any comments? We have been to the DR before, years ago. We have stayed at the Paradise Beach Club, the Playa Naco, and the Capella Renaissance. Thanks in advance for any replies!!

I am considering a trip to one of the three Riu resorts in Puerta Plata and am having trouble deciding which one...Merengue, Mambo, or Bachata. Did you chose Merengue over the others? If so, why?

Actually the travel agent recommended the Merengue. We could have gone to the Mambo or the Bachata but we just stayed at our resort. We had a great time. My only complaint is that the pool only has ladders to get into it, it does not have stairs to walk gradually into the water. A handicapped person or someone overweight like me might have a hard time getting in. It looked like the Bachata was more for a younger crowd and I am not sure about the Mambo.

Riu Mambo, Merengue and Bachata are all connected. They are alle about within a 5 minutes walking distance (Mambo to Merengue to Bachata is about 15 minutes).

I have visted Mambo last year and had a great time. Mambo is the oldest (relatively speaking; all three resorts are well maintained) of the three, Bachata the newest. During the day-time you are allowed to use the bars/restaurants/siwmming pools off all three hotels. In the evening the Bachata party is for their guests only (they get to wear a wrist-band). Merengue and Mambo can still make use of each other facilities.

The Mambo and Merengue pool are about the same size. Mambo is more roundish and with some more shade, Merengue square. Bachata has the biggest and nicest pool. But because of this is also the busiest. This pool also has a bar in the water and it is used a lot!

The buffet-restaurants of all three resorts have more or less the same food. When I was was there there was only one speciality restaurant(steaks and more). This was also the same for all three hotels.

The bar-area is nicest with Merengue IMO. Large and a little bit town-square-like.

The beach is in front of all three hotels. The beach is more or less the same everywhere. For snorkeling; the edges on either side or in-between Merengue and Bachata. Not spectacular visibility, but nice enough.
The Bachata has easy acces to an extra beach to the side were are the watersport activities are. Here are some beds etc also.

Between Merengue and Bachata is a nice little shopping street, prices are reasonably. Every hotel has its own little gift-shop combined with a little groceries and drugstore articles. Bachata has a small casino.

Rooms at Mambo were nice but not spectacular. Good size, working a/c, adequate bath-room, in-room fridge and rum.

Mambo is the cosiest, Merengue the most enterntaining, Bachata the most beautiful.

IMO; all three hotels are a good choice. Find your best deal and enjoy.

Puerto Plata is a nice town. Punta Russia (excursions are organised) a beautiful spot to go snorkeling.
