Just back from Cap Juluca

This place deserves all the praise it gets! It was immaculate, the beach was soft as flour, the service was there when you needed them but not on top of you. I water skied and used the Hobie Cat for the first time, which was fun and free. We stayed in a junior suite, the upper middle and it was perfect. We had access to our own rooftop terrace where we spent a lot of evening time. It was the perfect place to watch the sunset and enjoy the romantic moonlight. We ate at Pimms, Kemiera, Blanchards, Olivers, Mangos and Mulliahana. In our opinion, Mangos was probably the best setting/food combination. While Olivers, overall, had the best food. We liked Pimms and got a perfect table from the notorious Wilma without asking. (Turns out she is a very cool lady) We visited the other two big resorts (Cusinart, Mullihana) and we feel like Cap surpassed them both. They were very nice, but they seemed like "Hotels" while Cap felt like our own beach villa with perks. People have spoken of the "vibe" you get at Cap and its true. There is something mystical about this place that exudes a calm romance. Not sure if it was the lights of St. Martin in the distance, the waves you hear while you sleep or what. You just "feel" it whenever you are there and miss it when you leave. I would highly recommend it to anyone that needs to get away and simply relax. Not the place if you want to party into the night, its more a place to take in the sun, a good book, good food and great conversation. Hope you can make it some time! We will be back for sure.

Did you encounter any problems with bugs or flying insects at CapJ?

We stayed at the Cuisinart, but flew directly on to Anguilla from San Juan. I would not recommend stepping foot on St. Martin. I went there 10 years ago so me and my husband decided to check it out one day. Big mistake. Choose the day trip to St. Barts instead. My co-worker split her honeymoon b/w the Cap and St Barts. She said Cap was wonderful for the "rest" after the wedding. And said that St. Barts was like the french riveria. I think we'll try it next. I heard "in season" they have day trips to St. Barts from Anguilla.

To EFB74 and Claudette-

We flew into St. Martin and took the ferry over. Most do that and its the cheapest way. Its not too long a ride over, maybe 30 minutes.December, the weather was perfect beacuse the sun wasnt too intense, due to periodic patches of clouds. The temp was perfect. The bugs were very mild, we only felt a few at night while sitting on the veranda. If we turned the lights out, the problem was solved. If your thinking of Cuisinart or Cap, take Cap. It miles ahead in atmoshere and beach. If you want a pool, go to Cuisinart. Good luck!!!

Sorry but I'm going to burst the Cap Juluca bubble and have a moan about the place! We've also just returned - were there over Xmas!

This was our 4th trip to CJ and have always loved the place, however, this year, things weren't quite so good. Perhaps we were just unluckly!

Firstly, probably because of all the rain that's fallen, I got absolutely bitten to death, despite spraying myself with all sorts of stuff. I had bites everywhere, approximately 40 of them!

We felt the hotel was past its best! The room we had was tired and tatty! The bathroom floor leaked water and was never fixed, despite requests. It was dangerous to walk on and we soaked many towels. Water also leaked through the windows in the bedroom, creating long brown stains down the wall and then onto the floor, it was very nice to step into brown dirty water one morning! Again this was never fixed!

There was a rationing on towels! Not once did we ever get enough towels, on more than one occasion we were left with no bath towels whatsoever, no bath mat and one hand towel.

Our meal in Kemia was awful! It took 1.5 hours to get 3 so-so dishes, when the other 3 arrived 30 minutes later they were cold! We also found the service in Georges at lunchtime to be erratic, several times we didn't get any bread or salad dressing, needless to say we heard the service was worse in the evening!

Enough moaning about CJ! Island Car Rental now - we hired a car for the full 2 weeks we were there! Excellent car, good rate and good condition. However, we did a day trip to St Barts and left it at the airport. When we got back it had gone! ICR had taken it! We found out that they thought we'd checked out and left the island early. They'd rung CJ and was told we were "out"! ICR took it to mean we'd left and took back the car! Not even an apology or a refund of the taxi fare we had to take from the airport to the hotel.

Having said all of that - we had some superb meals on Anguilla - the usual ones were excellent but this year tried some new restaurants we had't been to before! Bistro Phil, The Overlook, Tasty's - all excellent. Tasty's was particulary good both for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Better quality and cheaper for breakfast than CJ.

The computer in the media room is constantly used by people writing their life story and was impossible to get on, even for a minute or 2. There is a time limit on the computers at Cuinsinart!

Sorry to moan and rant, but had to get it off my chest as we were very disappointed about CJ this year.
