How do most with 4 children travel?
We'd like to travel to the Carribean, but haven't been since having our fourth child. Problem: all hotels want you to book two rooms (won't guarantee that they will be adjoining)and the trip becomes cost prohibitive. What do those of you with four children do? Is there a certain suite size most hotels will allow those of us with 4 kids to stay? Any recommendations for islands/hotels...

Renting a villa is easy.
Just decide which island you want to go to and do a search for villas. Find one that suits your needs and book it. Its just like getting a hotel, except you have more privacy, more space and more flexibility in terms of cookiing/eating at home.

We have 3 kids, so we have few options with hotels too. We are staying at Ixchel Beach on Isla mujeres this year in a 2 BR condo. So many resort areas have condos available to rent and it's so much cheaper than a hotel. We use VRBO for many condo/villa rentals with great success. Playa del Carmen has some condo options too that are great for families and close to everything.

provo (turks & caicos) has a lot of resorts that are all condo with 2 bedroom units available. these may have a fold out couch as well. in particular royal west indies, the sands and either ocean club or ocean club west are all known as family friendly spots and all are directly on gorgeous, calm grace bay beach. each has there own restaurant. also plenty of alternate places to eat and a good grocery store.
on st. thomas you might consider www.secretharbourvi.com as they have a great swimming beach and 2 bedroom condo units. also has restaurant and a grocery is nearby.
villas are a great way to go. provo has loads of them and if you choose this island i could recommend a ocuple. i am currently looking for one on jamaica or grand cayman. jamaica has many and most of them come with staff including cook. actually almost all villas have a housekeepeer, also usually a gardener/pool person. and in mexico many of the houses come with a night watchman.
another alternative would be the Beaches clubs. they specialize in kids so i would assume they would offer accommodations keeping family all in one place.

We rent a condo/villa/2 BR timeshare, depending on where we are going. Grand Cayman is great for beachfront condo's, checkout caymanvacations.com for various options. We like the London House and The Reef Resort.

Depends on how old your kids are and how easily they can entertain themselves. Some kids seem to need the extra stimulation found with the activities provided by resorts, whether they have an official kids club or just have other people their age to play with.
in my family we were always required to be our own entertainment growing up, so villa vacations would have suited us perfectly. most villas have a pool and a nice view, and with the kitchen on hand it's easy to save money by eating breakfast in every morning, or to cater to picky appetites by having well-loved snacks and foods on hand at all times.
my husband's family, on the other hand, has many kids who complain of boredom and would much prefer to stay in a resort. one family in fact has 5 kids and it's hard for them to vacation anywhere with that many kids. when we travel with the older grandkids (we take them on a trip when they turn 13), we have opted to stay in villas and the older kids have really loved it. They get their own room, can stay up later to watch tv after we go to sleep, etc. And the extra room that a villa provides feels like a real luxury, and probably all for less money than 2 hotel rooms would be.
if you really do want a resort, check out Malliouhana on Anguilla. In the summertime they have a family special where the parents pay for one room and the adjoining kids' room is free.

Hi,
Would you consider chartering a sailboat or a catamaran for your vacation? Many boats offer discounts for children... Kids would have lots of fun - sailing, snorkelling, island hopping.
You can check the boats here:

Thanks to you all! I have been researching all your suggestions. Right now I'm most interested in the boating option. I never thought it was something I could afford. We are pwer boaters at home and all four kids love it, so this could be really fun for them as long as the crew is comfortable with them being only 3,4,7,8.
