Hawaii or no?

Hubby and I are considering Hawaii for our next vacation. We live on the East Coast but have enough FF miles to get there.

We love the Caribbean and are wondering how Hawaii (Maui maybe) compares. In general terms, I know the water/beaches/diving are better in the Caribbean and that Hawaii is more luch and mountainous etc.. But overall is Hawaii worth it?

In the Caribbean we like Aruba, Caymans and BVIs.

Thanks!

Having been all over the caribbean and to Hawaii:
Yes Hawaii is worth it. The beaches are not as good as the caribbean and the snorkeling is not as good BUT the scenery is fantastic. It is a different experience from the caribbean. Be sure to go for at least 2 weeks (the travel time is a killer) and see more than one island. I liked Kauii and The Big island best. Maui is more developed (which many people prefer) and has Haleakala (which is spectacular).

My father lives in Princeville, Kauii. I visited most of the islands as kid but haven't been in a few years. Kauii has an amazing canyon as I recall. I would combine a few days on Kauii and then go to the Big Island. Rent a car and explore. Everything is expensive because it is imported, so bring extra spending money.

Spelling, Kauai. Sorry, been a while.

Still recommend a combo of a small island and the larger island. You can hike to see old and newer lava flows on the big island.

Avoid Oahu.

Hawaiian and Aloha are the two major interisland carriers. There are also smaller carriers like Island Air and Paragon Wings. Most flights route through Honolulu (Oahu), so for example if you want to travel from Maui to Kauai, you'd have to stop (maybe change planes) in Honolulu. There are some direct flights from Maui to the Big Island so that would be a convenient combination. Go over to the Hawaii board and you'll get lots of opinions. Everyone has a different favorite.

The Polynesian culture in Hawaii is a different experience vs. the Caribbean. I love them both but it would be good to see and experience it. Give it a try.

Kristen, we were there in 2001 and flew from Oahu to the Big Island, to Kauai, then Maui. There was a travel agent in Honolulu that you could buy airline coupons for $60 each to use on, I think it was Hawaiian Air, can't remember. It worked very well, we just looked up the schedule and went to the airport, didn't need reservations. You might want to check the message board for Hawaii and you might find the name of the travel agent we used.

Kristen,
I am planning my 2 week honeymoon there for Aug. 2004. We are also from the East Coast and had the dilemma of Caribbean vs. Hawaii when choosing our honeymoon.
There was a post similar to yours that was about the same thing that I found helpful when making my decision. I just did a search on the US forum and found it, search under "augustlily" (the poster's screen name) and it came up under heading "Need your help learning about the islands of Hawaii...is it worth it to visit Hawaii from the East Coast?"
Let us know what you decide, and I'll be sure to post a trip report when I return!

I love the Hawaiian islands! My husband and I went to Maui and Kauai in Oct 1996 for our honeymoon. We stayed 12 days, dividing time on both islands. Loved it! So tropical, so fragrant, the people are so friendly. We did go snorkeling (my 1st experience) and saw some colorful fish, but the highlight was swimming with the green back turtles (we did this while in Maui). Great experience. Halakela (sp?) is great especially for sunrise, but take something warm to wear. Kauai is more green and more beautiful, but smaller and less to do. We stayed at the Marriott and it was by far the best Marriott we have stayed at yet! (We own timeshare) We did horseback riding and a helicopter tour in Kauai. I have been to Aruba and Paradise Island, Bahamas. Aruba so different from Maui/Kauai and is a desert island. Nice, but give me Maui anyday. I love the Bahamas and is much closer to get to (we live on the east coast as well), so we will be headed back there this summer. You will not regret your decision to travel to the Hawaiian islands!
