Grenada - Coyaba vs. Flamboyant

My fiance & I will be staying in Grenada for 10 days for our honeymoon end of May/beg. of June. We will be staying for a week at the Spice Island resort (can't wait!!!), but would like to add on three days at the beginning to extend our stay in Grenada.

We are looking at less expensive options and we want to be reasonably close to restaurants, etc. The two hotels that seem the best from my comparisons so far, are the Flamboyant and the Coyoba.

Any thoughts on which is best? Or advantages/disadvantages to either?

I appreciate your help!!!!

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding, AND on your excellent choice of honeymoon destinations.

Some thoughts... Not sure why you'd want to stay at either resort, since they are on the same beach as Spice Island. If you're wedded to those choices, I would choose Flamboyant because it offers somewhat different scenery (hilltop, overlooking Grand Anse) and easy access to a second beautiful beach in Morne Rouge. But, walking to restaurants means a climb up and down the hill, so factor that into your thinking.

If it were me, I would consider a change of scenery. Instead of the Grand Anse area, try L'anse Aux Epines (Prickly Bay). Several resorts -- of differing price ranges -- are located near this very pretty bay, and there are several restaurants from which to choose. Calabash, L'anse Aux Epines Cottages, and Twelve Degrees North come immediately to mind.

If you don't mind being a little further away from other stuff, try True Blue Bay Resort. It's not on a beach, but it's a spectacularly pretty property overlooking True Blue Bay. It's got a good restaurant and dock bar. It's the next bay west of L'anse Aux Epines, and minutes driving time to either Grand Anse or Prickly Bay.

Finally, for something even further afield, consider La Sagesse. It's on the ocean side of Grenada on a beach that many consider Grenada's finest -- though it's not the sugar white stuff that is Grand Anse. A real South Pacific feel far away from cruise ship daytrippers.

In any case, you can't go wrong. Every place you see will make you say "next time I'll stay there..."

Thank you, Callaloo!!! We are SO excited about Grenada!!!

Yeah, I would love to stay at another beach, but once we’re at Spice Island we’re all-inclusive, so before that I wanted to be near restaurants and stuff. Calabash sounds great, but a little pricey for us. How are the L’Anse Aux Epines Cottages? They’re reasonably priced – do they all have ocean views (honeymoon priority, you know!). 12 Degrees North sounds a little too rustic for my fiancé (no TV) and I read somewhere that it wasn’t air conditioned. That sounds a little scary in the Caribbean in June. Is that accurate?

True Blue also looks neat, but I think the fiancé will be saddened without a beach. (He’s fussier than I am!). We also will be cabbing it, as I don’t want to rent a car.

I’ve heard great things about La Sagesse too. I think the reason I wasn’t looking there was because it seemed to be really out of the way if you don’t have a car.

But – I could be wrong about any and all of this – thanks so much for your helpful ideas!!!

Wrigley 32--If you like the idea of LaSagesse, (the setting feels like you're back to the beginning of time on an unspoiled beach), don't rent a car for those first few days. You can unwind beachfront, then explore while you're at Spice, which is much closer to things.

You might also want to consider a cottage at Bel Air Plantation. It is more expensive than LAE cottages, but the cottages have cable TV and air-conditioning (which we never used during our February stay). The price during June should be quite reasonable, I would think (send them an e-mail and ask). It's only 11 or 12 cottages and villas. There's a restaurant on site. The cottages also have a small efficiency kitchen, and there's a "7-11" type store on the premises, so you can make your own breakfasts and enjoy the view from your balcony. The Bel Air is on the water, but the beach is not spectacular -- however, it is not far from La Sagesse beach. It is very quiet and uncrowded -- good for the first bit of a honeymoon, I would think.

Congrats--you've picked a great island for your honeymoon!

I see your dilemma--you want to stay in another part of the island where you can take advantage of beaches and restaurants before you move on to your AI stay at Spice Island. The problem is that to stay on a great beach and be within walking distance of restaurants you almost have to be on Grand Anse.

I would happily stay at the LAE cottages, but I don't think they're especially charming. More like concrete block bunkers, but you are within walking distance of three different restaurants. The beach there is small but sufficient. My husband and I spent a couple of pleasant afternoons there last summer during our stay in Grenada.

I know you're doing AI at Spice, and I agree that the food and presentation there are top-notch. And since you're already paying premium prices to stay there, you're probably not inclined to pay "twice" for meals by going out for lunch or dinner whilst you're there. however, you're perfectly situated there for exploring the many wonderful restaurants that Grenada has to offer.

So if you definitely don't want to rent a car, and if you definitely want to sample different restaurants, I would suggest avoiding La Sagesse. If you changed your mind on either of the above, I think it would be perfect for you. It's really gorgeous and secluded and rustic and a very romantic place to begin married life together--a very nice foil to the upscale luxuries you'll encounter at Spice.

If you don't mind lack of ambience, the LAE cottages would be a nice place to stay.

If you want to be on a great beach with lots of restaurant options nearby, Grand Anse is really the only way to go. Either Coyaba or Flamboyant would be fine, and in your situation I'd suggest choosing the best room for the lowest price and put the money you save toward meals and excursions.

I'll just be leaving Grenada as you're arriving, but I hope you have a marvelous time!

Have you considered the sister property to SI, Blue Horizon? Granted it's not beachfront, however we never felt the walk around the block was too inconvenient. We set up an account at SI and charged at the bar and boutique - very convenient. SI is just lovely - we spent our honeymoon there pre-Ivan and it was great. We were able to skip the AI back then so had a chance to really enjoy the great dining options Grenada has to offer. You've made a very good choice of destination and hotel and will just love it I'm sure. Congratulation and enjoy your stay.

Friends and I stayed at the Coyoba a lot before it was rebuilt after the hurricane. I think the location is great. I've never stayed at Flamboyant but my friends did once and really hated the hikes up and down to the beach. In fact, I believe they ended up leaving and going to Coyaba.

We stayed in the cottage at Flamboyant - it was one of the most incredible views I have ever enjoyed - unobstructed sweeping views of the beach and St. Georges which day or night was captivating....we were surprised at how much time we ended up spending on our long veranda just staring at this beautiful island. I vote for the cottage which is two bedroom though...at Flamboyant...I dont' know of the other rooms but Ican't imagine anything competes with this cottage.

Thanks everyone for your ideas and thoughts! We're still considering and looking into all of them.

Carib_dreamn, what do you mean by the two bedroom cottage at Flamboyant? I couldn't find that on their website? Because it sounds fabulous ...

Hi Wrigley sorry about the wait...

We went before Ivan hit but I know that the cottage is still there....and in good shape I gather. I don't think that it is advertised because there is only one...we were in email contact with the owner via the website and he told us this cottage was available. If you can get it and you don't mind paying the extra cost...and wasting a bedroom - it was extraordinary - I was 6 months pregnant when we went there and I had no problem with all the stairs as other people have stated. But my husband still says the only thing he did not love about GND is that we weren't on the beach...?!?!!? I would take the view any day....the cottage was really very lovely! I am sorry I didn't have the digital camera yet to take photos and get them up for you on line....you'll just have to take my word - HEAVEN!! I hope you hae a wonderful time GND is well not to be redundant but - HEAVEN! and congrats on the wedding!

wrigley32 what did you end up choosing? I am considering Coyaba but they only have as yet unrefurbished room available and I have read that they are shabby. thanks in advance!
