Great places in the out islands?
We want to Island Hop on the way back from the Dominican Republic. We are flying our small plane and were thinking of Cat Island and then explore Eleuthera via Harbor Island. Does anyone know anything about Inagua? Any suggestions on where to stay or better places to stop or must see places? We'll be there about March 8th.

Hawksnest Resort and marina on Cat has their own private airport within walking distance. Located on the gentler Caribbean Sea side of Cat. Sidney Poitier's daughter runs a pub just north of Hawksnest where a rake n' scrape band plays. Hawknest also has private trails through a mangrove forest, ending in a private beach. They'll pack you a lunch to take. Some neat beaches there, and snorkeling/scuba diving as well. Great and Little Inagua are pretty desolate with a handful of people and thousands of flamingoes. I'm writing a novel which includes the Inagauas. If you like, I could paste the part about that section of the Bahamas for you to read. Robert

Hi Juliet! I would go along with Robert and suggest Cat Island. My husband and I were there in 2000 and absolutely loved it. We stayed at the Hawks Nest Resort and Marina, which was great. Quiet and very lowkey. It has its own airstrip, so it would be very convenient for you. Needless to say, Cat Island is not built up so do not expect any highrises or "Ritz-Carlton-like" accommodations. Hawks Nest is nicely appointed and a very comfortable atmosphere. Hawks Nest has numerous beaches splattered around its 400 acres, and only 12 units, so you will not be overcome by crowds. The island has some of the lovliest people I have ever met. Check it out. Good luck with your planning.

Juliet,

To get to Harbour Island you have to land on Eleuthera and the closest airport is N. Eleuthera. There is no tower there, so you have to buzz the airport. I am sure you already have the manuals on that.

You can tie down there and take a taxi to the dock to Harbour Island and there are several nice places to stay on island, or you could look into some places on Eleuthera like The Cove, Rainbow Inn, Coco di mama.

Try the www.where2stay.com board for info on the out islands, phone number for reservations as well as rates for on and off season.

N. Eleuthera has fuel and nite lighting, the airport was recently redone to allow for nite flights, but not sure if those are happening yet.

You might get some info from the Harbour Island website which is www.briland.com.

Have a great time and enjoy the Bahamas.
