Best Budget Hotel

Can anyone give advice on a great hotel in Anguilla for about 250-275 (tax included)? We want to be on (or within a few minute walk to the beach). We'd also like to be in walking distance to restaurants/shops, if possible.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can give me some advice.

Look at Serenity, Shoal Bay Villas, or Ku on Shoal Bay East; Turtles Nest or Carimar on Meads Bay. Shoal Bay East has a 1/2 dozen or so beach bar/restaurants most of which are not open for dinner. There are a couple of nice restaurants on Meads Bay but no funky, reasonable lunch places. There's no shopping area on the island; just a dozen or so galleries and gift shops but they're very spread out. The bottom line is that you really need a car -- there are 80+ restaurants & 33 beaches to explore!

Serenity is on Upper Shoal Bay, which is just around the bend from Shoal Bay East. Upper Shoal Bay has a lot of crushed shells on it, but it's only a few steps by beach to one of the most magnificent beaches. In the summer you can get a one-bedroom suite for $200 plus 20% taxes and service charge. It has a restaurant and beach bar. The rooms are very nice (marble bathrooms) and have air conditioning in the bedroom. The suites have kitchens. The best views are from the upper level, but ground floor offers easy beach access. We stayed there one sumer for several weeks and really enjoyed it. There is walk-out snorkelling from the beach and beach bars along Shoal Bay East with live music on Sunday afternoons. There are also a few watersports available on Shoal Bay East including boat excursions with Shoal Bay Scuba and Watersports and Junior's Glassbottom Boat. For more information, visit www.serenity.ai.

Thanks for your responses. I'm very interested in being close to Shoal Bay, based on the popularity of that beach. Serenity does look really nice and I'm assuming it will be quiet

I'm also looking at Rendezvous Bay. Anyone know anything about the Anguilla Great House?

The Great House is an older property -- quaint is a good word here. They started sprucing it up last year but I don't know how many of the rooms have been updated. It's on our favorite part of Rendezvous Bay so we go there, rent a chair ($5) for the day, get a light lunch at their restaurant (or walk down to the Dune for a really good lunch) and generally just enjoy ourselves immensely. Serenity is a much nicer place to stay. though.
