Bermuda trip report (my first ever report)

Please bare with me this is my first ever trip report!

Well, our two week vacation began on 2/7/08. We left Vermont about 5pm and headed to my cousin's house just outside of Boston. She would be driving us in to the airport early the next morning. We had dinner with her and her husband and retired pretty early so we could be bright eyed for our travels the next day. My husband slept great!!! Not me, I was awake all night.

So we arrived at the airport and went on our way. The flight time from Boston to Bermuda is about an hour and 45 minutes. So, that went quite smooth. We got through immigration and customs fine and were greeted at the curb by my brother-in-law (who happens to be a taxi driver, bonus for us!). We went from the airport to Swizzle Inn (my sister is a big wig there). We met some local friends of my sister's and had a bite to eat and drink. We had a fish sandwich for my husband and just fries for me. Both were fine, but the cold beers were better! No rum swizzles today. We stayed at Swizzle for a few hours then went and checked into the St. George's Club. It was my sister and her husband (she treats herself for her birthday to a week at the club even though she lives right there) and me and my husband.

We found our unit to be well equipped (some things were brought from my sister's house which is within a two minute walk, convenient!). The beds were comfortable and the view a site to behold. So many different shades of blue water, pastel houses, and small boats with beautiful sails. Even though this is about our 15th trip to Bermuda the view still takes our breath away every time.

Once changed into shorts and short sleeve shirts (it is about 73 degrees and sunny with 83% humidity a big difference from the 12 degreees at home!) we go with my sister and brother-in-law and friends to the Waterfront Warf just down the hill in St. George (not sure if this is the real name because my sister calls it Gunther's - which is the name of the owner, I think). We had a few drinks and ordered some take out for dinner back at our unit. Pizzas for a few people and caesar salad for me. I didn't eat any of the pizza (not a pizza lover) but my husband's pepperoni passed his test but that doesn't take much. He would eat pizza every day! The salad was just right. We ate together had a bit of after dinner conversation plus drinks then headed to bed pooped from our first day.

Our first morning we woke up to blue, blue sky and bright sun and roosters cock-a-doodle-dooing right outside our door!. We decided it would be a relaxing day by the pool with a book and an occasional libation. What a day! We swam, we sunbathed, we read, we had some great talks, and really relaxed just me and my husband. We had decided back at the unit that morning that for dinner we would have some marinated steak tips that my sister's friends had brought with them. So after our day by the pool we showered and had a great cocktail hour with friends and then a delicious cook out. We turned in fairly early. We decided to turn the air/heat unit on fan so maybe it would drown out the noise of the chickens and roosters in the morning. We want to sleep in!!!

More later,

Enjoying your trip report so far--you'd never know it was the first one you've written.

Whatever your sad news is, I'm sorry to hear it.

First, cmcfong and ejcrowe, thank you for your condolences. It is difficult to lose someone close to you but even more difficult when you lose more than one person in a short period of time. Which is what has happened to us recently.

On to brighter things!......

Day 3 was party day. We were having a champagne brunch birthday party for my sister at our unit at the St. George's Club. We had told guest to arrive any time after 11:30 a.m. - My husband did the cooking (he's a chef) and I did the bartending. We had invited about 25 people. It was a beautiful day so we were able to use the patio outside for people to enjoy the day. It was about 72 outside but we both were quite warm inside while we took care of the party guests. We had a few fritatas, rumakis, shrimp cocktail, some bagels and locks, smoked bacon (brought from our Vermont smokehouse), homefries, fresh fruit, stuffed mushrooms and loads of champagne! 21 bottles of Vieve Cliquot (not sure of spelling). Needless to say most everyone drank alot! About 6 p.m. we started the characoal grill and cooked some burgers and dogs for the second round of food. We made sure everyone ate and drank plenty of water when they didn't have their champagne glasses to their lips! Whew! Guest started to leave about 7:30 and by 8:30 all had gone. We cleaned up as we went along so it was so nice to not have a mess to clean up after the party was over. Oh, and by the way, in Bermuda they would call that party "a good piss up"! I guess when people are drunk there, they call it "pissed", weird to me but you know when in Rome do as the Romans do. So, I agree it was a good piss up. My husband and I had a nice evening walk to wind down and luagh about all the silly things that happened throughout the day and then slipped into our comfortable bed for a well deserved night's sleep (oh, and my sister, the birthday girl/princess, was the last one to bed! - she's younger) Oh, one thing I forgot to mention was during the afternoon a bunch of people took a nice swim in the pool that was right outside our unit. I didn't (the water was freezing), but my husband did.

Day 4 was a Monday and we arose to another sunny blue sky, we took a walk to town (St. George) just to look around a bit and get some exercise (there are 53 stairs to and from town just to get up the hill to the club). We decided to look for a place for some drinks and lunch. Well, most everything was closed on Mondays. And even a lot of the shops had signs in them "gone to lunch, be back soon"! I guess they all go home for lunch. So we decided we would go back up the hill, which I vowed to be able to do all 53 steps without stopping by the time we left and I did! Phew...we had also taken the steps at the airport (75 - I know it's weird but I have a thing for counting the steps as we take them) instead of the escalator. So we are really getting in shape and it has only been a few days!
We got back to the club and went to their restaurant for some lunch and yes, they too were closed. So, we settled for a cold beer at the unit and left overs from the party the day before. We didn't want to eat much because we were going to some friends house in Tuckers Town for coctails and hores' dourves (I'm a terrible speller, sorry). My sister from Michigan is getting married at these people's house that we went to on May 4. The house was magnificent....with hundreds of views from the various rooms (some of them round)of the blue ocean. What a house! We had some nice wine and they offered up some snacks which I didn't try any of, being my picky self. But the others seemed to enjoy them.
We went from there to a lovely dinner at the Carriage House in St. George. There were 7 of us and we had drinks in their lovely bar first and then were seated in their candle lit dining room. It seems everyone their orders appetizers so as I said when in Rome do as the Romans do and I orderd a caesar salad that they prepare tableside. It was very good. My husband had Bermuda fish chowder which was to his liking very much. I had sauteed chicken for my entree and he had classic beef tenderloin with Bernaise. I liked his beter than mine. We shared a few very good bottles of red wine with dinner and some great after dinner port. Some of us walked home and some rode. I walked but no stairs this time. We went a different way. It was a nice day...off to bed.

Day 5 we went to Swizzle Inn South Shore to help my sister. The place was closed for a few days to do some renovations. The bar there is just beautiful.

About lunchtime we went back to the original Swizzle Inn and my husband had a pizza. He said it was pretty good (for Bermuda). We both had cold beers and then headed back to St. George's Club. Had a swim and got ready for dinner.

We went to Rustico in Flatts. There were 6 of us and we all had a great time. The had outside dining in a tent so that was nice. All our meals were great! First, the chef sent out some free appetizers (my sister is a regular there)of pizza bread, calamari, and homemade onion rings. Some of the apps that we ordered were, tuna carpaccio (sp), escargot, ceasar salad, onion soup, and I don't remember the rest. All the entrees, from fish to beef, to chicken were fabulous! And the wine list here is extensive and the prices were not too bad! A few people had dessert and most had dessert coffees or a nice glass of port to end a perfect dining experience.
