Airlines and bankruptcy
We are trying to make our airline reservations for Aruba. Had planned on flying with Delta, but now are hearing about a possible bankruptcy. It sounds like it will be a Chapter 11. Does anyone know how it works if you make reservations and pay for them and then they file? We've looked at other airlines, but we would be flying out of Mpls. and this seemed like the best idea. We are open to any advice.

I just cancelled my first class flights to las vegas. I did get a full refund in 24 hours posted to my credit card. It all depends on what kind of ticket you purchased...full fares/no restrictions get full refund, some discounted tickets are non refundable.
At this point I have not re-booked a flignt on another airline, I am doing the wait and see...If Delta dows not go belly up I will re purchase the tickets.

Well we are flying in two weeks on US Air which is currently falling apart (bankruptcy #2). I am hoping we will have no problems. I also have four freebies to San Francisco (Easter break) on Delta. I am counting on them flying then too. I believe if Delta files, it will be quite some time before they have trouble getting off the ground. United, I believe is in their second year of bankruptcy. It seems like many airlines are having trouble these days. How far out is your trip to Aruba? If it is 6 mos or more, wait. If it is 6 mos or less and a great price, go ahead. It is anyone's guess. You will love Aruba by the way. We went last April and had a blast (flew Delta too).

I wouldn't worry about Delta at this point. They'll continue to operate in the event of a Chapter 11 filing for quite some time. I would NOT book with US Air which is a totally different situation.

island_breeze,
When is your flight? If it's in the the very near future, you'll probably be OK. But I would be worried if you're holding tickets for several months away. If you do a search on the US board, you'll find lots of thread discussing the Sep 12th Chapter 11 filing by US Air. It's their second filing in 2 years (last one was Aug 2002 I believe). And there's lots of speculation that they will not re-emerge from this one. Also do a search on various news websites and you should find several articles.
