50th B/Day Getaway... In September?

In need of a generous dose of guidance.

Turning 50 in August, but can't get away until/except September. Not sure yet if this is a trip with a few women friends or my husband. Criteria are generally the same for either trip.

First off, the obvious: September is prime hurricane month. I have heard, through forums, that the "ABC" islands are generally spared much of the worst of the hurricane season. But I'm not sure those islands have what I'm looking for.

My husband and I stayed and Biras Creek 12 or so years ago (before it was Relais et Chateau) and it really embodied what we like: fine food, upscale but not stuffy, kind of quirky, quiet and off beaten path, lots of ACTIVE activities to do right there - hiking, day sailers, swimming in ocean and pool, Boston Whalers, sea kayaking, gardens, bikes, tennis etc. Sooo sorry to hear of its sudden closure last summer. This would probably be a no-brainer otherwise.

So, of course, that's what I'm looking for. A bit decadent and luxurious but not snobby. Not too commercial or nightclubby or ... you know (no "Breezes"). Active activities to choose from without too many hoops or added fees. Great food and wine list. And a spa. Because I'm turning 50 and deserve an awesome massage and pedicure while I'm there! Oh, and in prime hurricane season.

Forum - I am at your kind mercy! Thanks in advance.

Happy birthday!! I see no one has chimed in her. Honestly I just wouldn't go to the Caribbean in September. How about a week in Paris?

Never mind the advice not to visit the Caribbean in September. The hurricane season spans June to November. Oftentimes there simply are no strikes against any island in a season. There is no way of predicting activity for a specific island. In any case the Caribbean islands span a huge area. Some of THE most beautiful weather is actually in that season.

Good luck.

Your biggest problem will be that many places close for the month of September. Look at Guana Island in the BVI, it might be something you are interested in. Maybe look at St Barts?

I don't know of any resort in St. Lucia that closes then. I visit every year.

Tough one. Difficult to replicate Biras Creek. A couple of suggestions. Look into Secrets Maroma. Several activities offered in the inclusive rate. It will be cheaper than Biras but not what I would describe as off the beaten path. Their beach is nice and the restaurants very good for an all inclusive and the service is top notch. It does not quite have the exclusive feel of Biras or the hiking. I was there with several of my girlfriends a couple years ago (all in mid to late 40s) and we all enjoyed Secrets. It is more of a couples resort but that didn't bother us. I also like the Guana Island suggestion above. You may want to look into Jumby Bay. I think Caneel on St John would be another one that may fit the bill.

Check out Kamalame Cayin the Bahamas. We went their for my Birthday and it exceeded expectations. It is a private island with guest cottages that come with a golf cart. The food is wonderful!!! Beautiful Balinese spa over the water. The pictures are accurate. Beautiful quiet beach.
