Recommendations for casual, moderate eating in the Canadian Rockies

Hi - we will be in the Canadian Rockies for two weeks in early September. We like to go to casual, moderate restaurants (no fine dining) but still like great food. We will be 3 nights in Jasper, 3 nights near Lake Louise and a week in Canmore. I know nothing is cheap right now but would like to stay relatively moderate and still eat decent meals.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi - we have made 3 trips to the area in the last 3 years, with our 4th coming up in mid-September. We also like to eat mostly casually. This is what we have found - and it is by no means, a complete list. I'm sure the area experts will provide many more.

In Canmore, we have found 2 places we like - Grizzly Paw and the pub in the Georgetown Inn (great for fish & chips). We ate at one place on Bow Valley Trail that we didn't like, but I can't remember the name - something Steakhouse.

In Lake Louise, we have enjoyed both Bill Peyto's in the hostel, and Timberwolf Pizza & Pasta in the Lake Louise Inn near the village.

In Jasper, we've enjoyed the Jasper Pizza Palace, Earl's, L & W (I think that's the name), and Karouza's (good steaks).

In Banff, we have eaten 2 places that we liked - Keg Steakhouse on Banff Ave and Saltlik. We did not like the English pub on Banff Ave on the 2nd floor.

We also buy supplies for picnic lunches most days.

A couple of places that aren't so moderate, but still pretty casual, that we have tried are - Bow Valley Grill in the Banff Springs Hotel (for one of our anniversaries), and Baker Creek Bistro (need reservations).

There are many other places to eat in all of your destinations that we have yet to try - mainly because we're usually so tired by the end of the day that we go back to the Canmore condo (or Jasper cabin) and eat lightly instead. But other posters can give you many more recommendations, both for Banff and your other destinations. We also plan to try some of the other places when we go in September.

Two other things you can do - check out Taxi Mike's Dining Guide for Banff & Canmore (his website is his name TaxiMike), and google some of the restaurants and check out their menus.

Enjoy your visit. It's a wonderful area!

Grizzly Paw in Canmore is great.
Banff, Magpie & Stumps is good Tex/Mex type of place - good margarittas. Also St Jame's pub/restaurant is very good and a menu with enough selections you could go a couple of nights.
In Lake Louise, we enjoyed our meal at the Railway Restaurant.
All of these are very reasonably priced restaurants.
The Keg, as mentioned above, is an excellant restaurant if you want a good steak. However, it is a little pricey. In Banff, Buffalo Mountain Lodges' restaurant gets good reviews if you want to try some bison. But, it is pricey too.

Have fun.

In Banff I would suggest, Saltlik, Buffalo Mountain Lodge and Coyote Cafe. Also, there is Evelyn's which has great coffee and treats. St. James Gate pub is also a good place to go and have a drink, nice ambiance with many different beers on tap.

As for Canmore, The Grizzly Paw has pretty good food at a moderate price. I would highly suggest Murietta's for lunch (at dinner, the prices go way up). Also while in Canmore, you must eat at Crazyweed Kitchen, a bit pricey but I'm pretty sure you will not be disappointed.
