I remember there are several places in the area, that's the problem-too
many. I am looking for someone to
give me a first hand choice of one rather than just walk in and hope
I picked the right one..

I really enjoy the pizza at Il Fornello. The King St. location isn't far from the Royal York. The Queens Quay location is on the lake but just a little farther away. The King location in particular can get pretty busy so I recommend making a reservation.

I would second Il Fornello for the ambiance.
But it's not a 'have a few beers' kind of a place, more like some decent wine and be prepared to pay...last time pizza, salad and wine, tip for 2 was around $130.
Toronto doesn't do the 'good' pizza, few beers kind of thing very well,IMHO, unless you are into chains like East Side Mario's. If you wanted to come further north, Il Mercurio at St. George and Bloor does really good pizza, but once again, pricey (maybe $150 for the same meal as above).

My sources tell me Terroni on Victoria is closed.
Terroni on Adelaide, east of Yonge, still exists. My same source couldn't get a table at lunch last Friday, and warns it is noisy and has spotty service.
That said, she says it would be a good pizza and beer place.
As someone said, Toronto really isn't a beer and pizza kind of a town, at least down in the center.
Same for not being a "family-style" Italian restaurant kind of a place, with huge helpings and red and white table cloths.

Completely true. A great slice of pizza is hard to find in T.O. Are there any decent pubs/bars in Toronto that serve great food?

Hi Sherri,
A couple of good spots for pizza, close to the Royal York Hotel:
(1) Libretto (Ossington and Queen St.) -- they have genuine Italian, wood-oven pizzas. Since they opened only 8 weeks ago, there are line-ups outside the door, unless you go early i.e. 5:00 or 5:30 pm.
(2) Our favourite is Terroni's which is on Adelaide and Victoria Street, just east of the Royal York. You can walk there from the hotel, and may choose to do so on the way back to the hotel since you will be full and satisfied!
Enjoy.

Hi, gasped when BAK wrote Terroni had closed it's Victoria street location, much relief that they're in the old 'Courthouse' nearby.
It's interesting how important a good pizza is to people.
I look forward to trying Libretto, having read mainly rave reviews - but wouldn't really say it's 'close' to the Royal York. The 'Magic Oven' restaurants make a great pizza as well but none are near your hotel.
Porretta's on Harbord St., lamentably long gone, had a fantastic eggplant pizza, I wish I could find an equivalent.
'Pete's Creole Pizza' at Queen and Parliament has some great combinations as well - and a Magic Oven just opened up on Queen around the corner. 'John's' on Baldwin can be hit or miss but has terrific atmosphere.
