July 28th-Aug 5th? Festivals.. Best whale watching?

We have a flight arriving in Halifax on July 28th .. 6:30pm. We leave out of Halifax Aug 5th at noon. Rented a car at the airport and have a hotel booked that night at the Westin. Good choice I hope? Now that we officially have an exact starting/ending point.. where should we go first? Want to see Peggy's Cove, Mahone Bay, Lunenburg. Should we do this ride south first? Also want to spend about 2 days in Cape Breton. Considering booking at Lantern Hill & Hollow in Ingonish and maybe the 2nd night staying in Baddeck at the Castle Moffett if avail. This one sounds pricey... any other suggestions if not available? I'm trying to stay at the Castle Aug 2nd because this is actually my husband's 40th birthday. Want to have him bring in his 40th in style!
Also.. any great festivals happening the week we're in NS. If so, we can maybe change to accomodate being in the town with the most happening. I know weekends are popular for the festivals. Since we arrive on Friday eve. we'll have Sat. to spend somewhere.. but starting out from Halifax.
Any help, suggestions are greatly appreciated!!!
Thank You!

August 3-6 is the Mahone Bay Classic Boat Festival http://www.woodenboatfestival.org. My husband is a small boat builder and will be exhibiting a boat there.

Lantern Hill & Hollow are wonderful little cottages right on the water. I haven't stayed there myself, but everyone I know who has stayed there, has loved it. We drove by and checked them out when we we were in Cape Breton last fall. I did stay at the Keltic Lodge and loved that.....my husband golfed while I "spaed" at their new Aveda spa. As for Castle Moffet, from what I hear, it's overpriced and not worth it. I've stayed at the Duffus House in Baddeck and would not recommend it.

Check out the official NS tourism website...it lists all the festivals & events and is searchable by date, type, etc.

While on that website order the excellent (free) tourism guide - great map and comes with a separate guide on the festivals & events with write-ups on the big events.

Enjoy-la!

If you are going to spend a night in Baddeck, stay right in the Village. The Inverary Inn is lovely and on the lake.

The Westin is a grand old hotel located in the south end of Halifax. It is located next to Pier 21 and at the end of the boardwalk for the waterfront. I think you will enjoy it and the location. The weekend of Aug 5th is the lead into Natal Day (Aug 7th) so I am sure there will be lots happening on the waterfront.

When going from Cape Breton back to Halifax, there is the Riverfront Jubliee happening in New Glasgow, Pictou Co. It is a four day music event that is held outside. I believe it runs from August 3 - 6.

While Castle Moffett is lovely I would recommend staying in the Village of Baddeck.

Oh yes, whale watching ... try Pleasant Bay in Cape Breton. You can also go watching out of Halifax waterfront.

By far the best whale watching in Nova Scotia is the lower Bay of Fundy including Brier Island and vicinity.

cheers

Thank you all for your replies. You all have been most helpful! Hopefully this will be my last request. Flying into Halifax on the 28th.. should we head north first to Cape Breton.. or South first to Mahone Bay area? How long should we stay in the Cape Breton Area? Are there plenty of hotels in route from Halifax to Ingonish? If so, what towns do you recommend staying in along the way. Is it possible to see Hopewell Cape if we take a ferry when we're on the west coast? I know I'm a pest, but confused at to where to start!
Thanks again!

With a short trip like yours I wouldn't bother with Hopewell Cape.

Save it for another visit. The New Brunswick coastline is one of the under -appreciated parts of Canada.

cheers
