Wedding in Fiji

O.K. I dont want to get razzed by the males on this site. And I know it is not a fashion site - but who better to know the answer to this question than the savvy travelers on this Board.
What does the mother of the groom wear to a Fijian wedding on the beach. Help

Dear Jean:

The way I have always understood the "rules" is that the mother of the groom first lets the mother of the bride pick out her outfit. This prevents the two from wearing the same dress or the same color, etc. In your case, assuming there is a mother of the bride, this may help you decide what outfit would be appropriate.

Also, has the bride indicated if her dress is very formal or is she getting married a la Baywatch babes in a bathing suit and sarong? This should help you decide on what is appropriate for you as well.

I dont know where you are from, but this is just about the beginning of cruisewear season in major US stores and catalogs (e.g. Talbots), so you should be able to find something simple and elegant and cool all at the same time.

Hope this is helpful.

I forget what you call them but they are a piece of cloth and everybody wears them. You might add a crown of flowers on your head and a flower on the proper side over your ear to indicated if you either available or not available. If that is too complicated -- there is no formality there -- as the first person said wear what makes you feel good and you don't need shoes.

Louis - if you are refering to the SP traditional bark cloth it's called tapa in Fijian. It would be very appropriate to wear at least a little even if just a little around the waist. In Samoa it would be almost the entire costume, in Tonga I have seen it more as a kind of formalware addition to a skirt/sulu. They call it sort of a Tongan version of a jacket and tie. ;-)

Goeffulu -- yes that is one of the dress items that men wear a great deal I can't remember what women most often wear today but they were not the Pareau of Tahiti as I remember them as being more fully dressed.

More to the point for Jean. Run a search on Fiji wedding photo and you will see what a wedding is like there. This will put you at ease. You can wear anything that is fun but it should be somewhat modest. The Fiji women have not gone bare breasted for many many years. You can try the following sites.

http://www.matangiisland.com/Gallery...1/image001.htm and

http://www.union.edu/PUBLIC/ANTDEPT/fiji/fjphoto7.htm
Many thanks to all. I guess the answer is 'whatever I want to". I was thinking about being taken by boat to a beach - long pants would not roll up high enough - and I am not a shorts person. So perhaps a long dress with good slit. Bride will be in plain white dress. Thanks all.
